One of CJ's favorite meals from his childhood, is bacalao salad. It's a Puerto Rican

recipe that his mom's family used to make, and as with most recipes that are passed down from generation to generation, I'm willing to bet that no two families make this dish the same.
The original was made with salt cod, different tubers like Ʊame and yucca, hard boiled eggs, tomato, onions and olive oil.
Our new and improved vegan version swaps out the eggs for avocado, I usually include yuca when I can find it, otherwise I will just use a variety of baby potatoes, red onion, greens, tomatoes and a drizzle of olive oil. I also like to serve it with our pio pio sauce (Aji Verde), because I can eat that stuff on just about anything. And of course a side of crispy, crunchy tostones.
For the fish, we used Trader Joe's beer battered plant-based fish fillets, which were pretty good but didn't have a fishy taste at all. Obviously it's a packaged and processed food so it's not the healthiest, but the ingredients are actually not bad. The fish fillets are made with jackfruit, king mushrooms, potatoes, and tofu.
I don't have an air fryer, so I baked them in the oven and they turned out incredibly crispy.

As one who usually shops at TJs weekly Iā€™m always excited to see something new

thatā€™s vegan friendly, especially the more creative products. Itā€™s also nice to see vegan meat replacements that are gluten free so those who need to avoid gluten may enjoy them.

The texture of these fillets was pretty good! Itā€™s been quite a long time but it seems similar to fried fish. Unfortunately the flavor doesnā€™t match up. I couldnā€™t detect any fish/sea-like flavor. The flavor was coming from the batter. It doesnā€™t taste bad, but itā€™s kind of a generic ā€œfriedā€ flavor.

I made a quick tarter sauce and served these with that, but I think these may be better served in tacos with all the fish taco toppings. That way there would be less reliance on the flavor of the fish itself.

Unless you have an allergy or sensitivity to the ingredients or cannot find them, Iā€™d instead recommend the Garden fish filets. ($5.17 for 10 oz).

I liked these! Theyā€™re both obviously not fish (as evidenced by the occasional chunk of

jackfruit and mushroom, and a texture thatā€™s not quite as firm as I remember of fillets) and also close enough for me. I found the composition fascinating: #glutenfree and surprisingly flaky. Theyā€™re unusually high in fiber, although I wish they also offered a bit more protein. Each triangular piece is about the size of my hand, so theyā€™re decently filling ā€” cut in half, theyā€™re great for #leavethefishinthesea tacos (last image.)

As mentioned in earlier reviews, thereā€™s no detectably marine flavor ā€” mostly #sweetdreamsaremadeofgrease breading and a hint of pepper (although Chinese cooking has formed an association between white pepper and fish in my mind, so it somehow works.) The batter crisped up perfectly in my toaster oven at home, as well as the office air fryer (bonus: no odious smell in communal kitchens!) Be prepared for oil, as the fillets will release lots of it.

I think the $4.99 price tag is reasonable given the novelty of this product. In my opinion, the beefless bulgogi ($4.49) is still Trader Joeā€™s best mock meat to date, but this was good enough to merit a repurchase.

I thought these were pretty good! The outside was perfectly crispy and overall had a

good flavor. My only complaint is that the inside was a bit mushy, instead of flaky.Ā  The texture of fish could be improved but they are on the right track!
