#### In recent years, more and more fashion brands are claiming to be sustainable and ethical. But, what does sustainable fashion really mean? Can any fashion brand be truly “sustainable”? 

#### Our founder, Vikas, gets to know more about Claudia and her vegan handbag brand, Miomojo, where “Ethics meet Aesthetics”.

#### **Vikas: Hi Claudia! Tell us more about you**
#### I have always been exposed to fashion as my mum had a small clothing shop. I had to help out since a very young age and was directly involved with the process such as going to wholesalers to select the items, storing, labelling and preparing the goods once they came in our the small warehouse in the backyard and helping out in the shop every time I was off from school. 
 
#### Growing up, I was interested in being able to interact with diverse groups of people from all over the world. Thus, I studied many languages from an early age. I also started travelling as soon as possible and soon found myself in a university in Germany. In university, my interest in fashion widened further into the realms of design, especially interior design. After all, there are interconnections between creative and design endeavours.

#### **Was there a moment when you started to pay more attention to animals and the environment? When did you go vegan?**
#### I understood my love for animals very early on. As a young girl, I was saving fish that was sold by putting them into our bathtub. We also had cats and dogs which we constantly sheltered from the streets. Our house was also on land where we kept all kinds of farm animals. Unfortunately, we also kept pigs who never saw the light of day except when left out to stroll maybe 3 times in their whole lives... I was feeling pretty desperate, especially from the unbearable screaming when they were killed. It was horrible. I knew that it was wrong and refused to eat meat when I was 10 years old, much to the disappointment of my parents. They would always try to hide meat in vegetable balls or tomato sauces. Fortunately, I could detect even the smallest piece of Ham and refused to eat some of their food, which led them to give up eventually.

#### With time, I also gave up fish and cheese. Like many of us, I did not know about the horrors of the dairy industry. The more I knew, the more I felt that it was impossible for me to contribute to the immoral, shameful and unethical practices of the industry. Nowadays, it is so much easier for us to live happy and healthier lives without harming animals, and also reducing our impact on the environment. Why shouldn't we?

#### **I totally agree! Tell us more about your company, and what does it mean to you**

#### Miomojo comes from the English expression: Today I lost my mojo, or today I got my mojo back and so on… When you have your mojo, you are in a state of bliss, very inspired and feel that all of your dreams can come true. It was too English-centric, thus, I translated the term “My” to its Italian counterpart, “Mio” and voilà, we get “Miomojo”. Afterwards, I discovered that “miomojo” also means lucky bag in a South African dialect.

#### **I would think that even with how great your product is, it must not have been easy to start as a sustainable business. What was it like to start a business that challenged fashion trends?**
#### The beginning of Miomojo was exactly what you would expect - extremely time-consuming and challenging. Plus, issues on sustainability and using vegan materials were rarely discussed. I was looked upon condescendingly initially but, when it became apparent that issues of sustainability and social responsibility were gaining ground, I was respected more which gave me strength to continue. 

#### It was hard finding factories and partners that believed in our business model. Eventually, we were able to make compromises necessary to make things happen! I enjoy being disruptive and am very happy more strides are made in the industry to be more sustainable and ethical. This year, we were able to try new products like mushroom leather, and are excited to introduce them into the market.

#### You know the saying: first they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you (this happened to us with the leather industry attacking us a couple of years ago), then you win. 

#### **You are definitely winning now, what do you think is fueling the trend in sustainability in the fashion industry?**

#### I think that a greater awareness of where our things come from, and our contribution to a capitalist society is influencing people’s choices. There is still more that needs to change, however, we have made great strides over the years. We are experiencing first hand the consequences of climate change and environmental damage, such as, pandemics, natural disasters and so on, so people are more conscious of these issues.

#### **Being more conscious of such issues, how do your products differ from the typical unsustainable fashion brands?**
#### Materials that cause deforestation and biodiversity loss are common. On top of that, wasteful processes are also the norm and therefore, contribute to the climate crisis. Miomojo would never use animal-derived materials. We aim to support new materials and operations that are ethical by finding the right materials and creating beautiful products with them. For instance, we use materials such as Apple Skin, Cactus Leather, and BioVeg (alternatives using biopolyols originating from no-food and GMO-free grains, combined with textiles sourced from natural or recycled materials) which are biodegradable and sustainable. We are also testing other alternatives like Rice Skin and mycelium.

#### **That’s exciting, any campaigns to look forward to in the future?**
#### We are preparing ourselves for a complete new phase for 2023 and 2024, focusing most of our efforts in a structured distribution through selected shops, department stores and online marketplaces, beginning in Europe.

#### **I am very much looking forward to that! Is there anything you’d like to share with the abillion community? How can abillion members support you?**
#### Mahatma Gandhi once said that “the greatness of a nation can be judged by the way its animals are treated.”  There is still so much to learn and so many more ways to improve and optimise, but I am hopeful that Miomojo can help inspire a greater level of compassion and consciousness in Italy and the world at large.

Salvajes It is a sanctuary in Argentina, they have 400 animals in the sanctuary, they have actually canceled the donations from the application, they are suffering an economic crisis and the animals do not have enough food for the next few days, it is really sad how they have canceled the contributions for receive donations the animals really need help!!! 🆘🆘🆘

Ahimi, which tastes just like tuna but is made from tomato, is rapidly gaining in popularity for its innovative plant-based approach to our worsening marine life crisis.

#### It chews, tastes, and looks like fish – but it’s actually made from a tomato! Ahimi, Ocean Hugger Food’s debut product, is a fully plant-based alternative to raw tuna. It’s made from just five clean, simple ingredients – tomatoes, soy sauce, sugar, sesame oil, and filtered water. The secret, founder David Benzaquen notes, is to eliminate the taste of tomato and create the chewy texture of raw fish. There are multiple plant-based fish alternatives in the market, but Ahimi is the first to replace raw tuna. And it sells wholesale for a third of the price of sushi-grade tuna.
#### **Why replace tuna?**
#### The development of Ahimi and the creation of Ocean Hugger Foods are a response to our global marine life crisis. [**National Geographic**](https://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2006/11/061102-seafood-threat.html) and [**The New York Times**](http://www.nytimes.com/2006/11/03/science/03fish.html) have reported that by 2048, there will be zero commercial fish of any species left in the ocean due to overfishing. The World Wildlife Fund warns that the capacity of current fishing infrastructure globally is [**2-3x**](https://www.worldwildlife.org/threats/overfishing) larger than global fish stocks and that [**85 percent**](https://www.worldwildlife.org/industries/wild-caught-seafood) of the world’s fisheries are fully exploited or overexploited, depleted, or recovering from depletion. Meanwhile, demand for fish continues to increase.
#### A quick glance at the state of our oceans reveals the inherently problematic nature of fishing, wild or farmed. Wild-caught fishing takes fish out of a limited pool of animals in the ocean and poses a tremendous impact on the rest of the ecosystem due to by-catch. In other words, imagine a giant net scooping up every lion, giraffe, zebra, cheetah, and rhino in the savannah just to catch gazelles – that is what is happening in our oceans with commercial fishing.
#### What’s happening to marine ecosystems isn’t as visible to us as what’s happening on land. Aquaculture is often worse than wild fishing. Most species in fish farms are fed wild fish, and so the total outcome of calories produced versus consumed is negative – it takes 5 or more pounds of wild-caught fish to grow a single pound that is fed to people. And the tight quarters of fish farms mean that the pesticides, fungicides, herbicides, antibiotics, and hormones given to the fish to keep them from getting sick and spreading disease are actually leaching into the oceans and creating dead zones, algae blooms, and coral damage, since these farms are simply huge nets within the ocean.
#### **Moving away from massive extraction**
#### Ocean Hugger Foods began as a solution to the unsustainable and massive extraction of fish from the ocean. When Certified Master Chef James Corwell visited the Tsukiji Fish market in Japan (the largest fish market in the world), he was shocked by the scale of fish being sold – 4 million pounds of tuna daily! He then dedicated several years to create a plant-based alternative to tuna, and thus Ahimi was born. Benzaquen remarks that Ocean Hugger Foods was “founded by a world-famous chef with the goal that we would change the oceans only by putting forward the most beautiful and delicious food. That is central to everything we do.” There is no sacrifice being made to the oceans to make Ahimi, and it makes all the difference.
#### **Isn’t raw tuna traditional for sashimi?**
#### *“The Japanese sushi experience is something so beautiful and historic, it needs to be maintained for many more years, but the way our oceans are going, it’s not possible unless we find new ways to create those textures and flavors.” – David Benzaquen*

#### Raw tuna is an essential ingredient in Japanese cuisine, and yet Ahimi has been warmly welcomed by the Japanese. Ocean Hugger Foods’ first distribution deal was with a Japanese seafood company that is now their largest distributor. “Our customers are Japanese restaurants, poke restaurants, and chefs who are working with us on a daily basis. Ahimi is being celebrated by seafood chefs as something that deserves to be there. It’s prepared in the same way and creates that delicious sushi experience” says Benzaquen. The Japanese take an innovative approach by understanding that their cuisine is thousands of years in development, incorporating foods from all over the world. The five largest Japanese food distributors have requested to sell Ahimi.
#### Considering the environmental impact, alternatives like Ahimi provide an opportunity for traditional seafood companies to demonstrate a commitment to sustainability. Ahimi is also financially sustainable. For those in the seafood business, the price volatility of sushi-grade fish is extremely worrisome as the supply chain access to commercial fish is becoming more limited. And for chefs, introducing a plant-based option that’s also cheaper than sushi-grade tuna is an added benefit.
#### **Beyond fish**
#### The plant-based movement is rapidly gaining traction around the world. We find ourselves in a time of necessity sparking innovation for entrepreneurs, food scientists, and chefs to create new plant-based products. Regardless of what we would like to keep eating, we simply do not have enough land space or enough fish in the oceans to be able to keep eating animal proteins the way we have been. That means we’re going to have to consider how our diets will change.
#### Ahimi will be launching in the next few weeks in cafeterias at Google, Stanford University, LinkedIn, Twitter, SAP, and Wake Forest University, in addition to independent sushi and poke restaurants. You can already find Ahimi at Whole Foods in New York and Los Angeles. It’s also available online through Veestro, a plant-based meal delivery service. As Ocean Hugger Foods scales up its production, the product will be launched beyond North America beginning with Europe and Asia.
#### Ocean Hugger Foods has more products in the pipeline, including plant-based alternatives for unagi (eel) and sake (raw salmon). Called Unami and Sakimi, these names refer to the spirit of the fish and are about more than just ground-breaking food science. Benzaquen notes:
