Have you ever heard of wheat germ? The "germ" is the part of the wheat kernel that sprouts into a new wheat plant. It's essentially the embryo of the wheat seed. It's the smallest part of the kernel, but it packs a powerful nutritional punch. I just recently learned that wheat germ is VERY healthy for you, and ironically when food manufacturers make bread, they typically remove the "germ" from the wheat -- YES, they strip away the healthiest part of it and only leave the refined carbs. They apparently do this because the germ contains oils that can go rancid quickly without refrigeration. And they want bread to have a longer shelf life. 🙄 On top of that, this single 20oz jar of health-promoting nutrients costed me over $30 dollars! So what nutrients are inside of wheat germ? ▪︎ Wheat germ is a good source of fiber, which is important for digestive health and can help regulate blood sugar levels. ▪︎ It is a good source of plant-based protein, especially beneficial for vegetarians and vegans ▪︎ Wheat germ contains healthy fats, including essential fatty acids, which are important for heart health. ▪︎ Vitamins and minerals: It's a good source of vitamin E, which acts as an antioxidant, and B vitamins, which are important for energy metabolism. It also contains minerals like magnesium, zinc, and phosphorus. I am aiming to eat two spoonfuls of it each morning! You can add wheat germ to your oatmeal, smoothies, cereal, etc. ○ What does it smell like? Like freshly baked wheat bread. It smells hella good! 😋 ○ What does it taste like? It tastes like wheat that has been ground up into a powder. Not a lot of flavor on its own, but it goes down smooth if you mix it with fruit or a smoothie. (In the old days, people lived off the land, and a woman could take some of her family's harvested grain, grind it up and make a small loaf of bread for the family's dinner meal. The bread would be consumed within a single day of being baked. None of this modern day sitting on a shelf for weeks at a time stuff. Back then, bread was much more healthy.)
