Matcha Mylkbar

Matcha lovers, rejoice! Matcha Mylkbar is Australia's first plant-based specialty cafe. The founders were inspired by the matcha trend that started in 2015. True to its name, the cafe specializes in matcha-based drinks and incorporates the flavor in a slew of beverages like its matcha kombucha, beetroot latte, and mushroom latte.

For brunch classics, you can't go wrong with Avocado Hollandaise eggs. The sunny yolk, which you can pop, is made with sweet potato, coconut milk and linseed protein while the white, wobbly exterior is made from a mixture of agar agar with coconut and almond milk. Save room for dessert and tuck into their vegan matcha pancakes with chocolate sauce.

Mister Nice Guy’s Bakeshop

If savory brunches are what you're after, a visit to Mister Nice Guy’s Bakeshop should be in your breakfast plans. The cafe is also Melbourne's first plant-based bakery, and they turn their breads into hearty deli sandwiches too. We recommend going for their Chickpea Tuna Baguette or their Sriracha BBQ Chik'n to start off your day and end your brunch with a sweet treat like the classic jam-filled Bronut (a brioche doughnut).

Monk Bodhi Dharma is a quaint cafe just off Carlisle street serving up small vegan plates with an extensive coffee and tea selection. Their breakfast menu features buddha bowls, acai bowls, avocado toasts, and a big brekkie set. For something different, switch up your pancakes for Zucchini and Mint Hotcakes with beetroot relish and a dollop of sour cream. If you have room for dessert, get the Banana Dharma Pancakes. It’s made with buckwheat flour and served with Dulce de leche ice cream, maple syrup, and topped with banana chips.

Sister of Soul - St Kilda

Since opening in 2019, Sister of Soul has been the go-to vegan spot for classic brunch dishes and smoothies. The brunch menu is a simple, no-frills affair. We recommend getting their breakfast burrito with pulled jackfruit and a smoothie to your liking while other options to consider include an avo or mushroom toastie. Sustainability is also one of the eatery’s core missions – it diverts several tons of food waste and coffee grinds away from landfills, instead using it for compost to enrich the soul at St. Kilda’s Veg Out Community Gardens.

The Ambitious Act

The Ambitious Act is the perfect brunch spot to get away from Downtown Melbourne. Dine under the array of lush plants hanging from the ceiling while feasting on brunch dishes like their Roast Veggie Stack, Avo & Kimchi Toast, or vegan BLT. Fun fact: You might spot an actor or two if you're lucky. The cafe hosts several musical performances and evening sessions for art.
