Trader Joe's

I liked these! They’re both obviously not fish (as evidenced by the occasional chunk of jackfruit and mushroom, and a texture that’s not quite as firm as I remember of fillets) and also close enough for me. I found the composition fascinating: #glutenfree and surprisingly flaky. They’re unusually high in fiber, although I wish they also offered a bit more protein. Each triangular piece is about the size of my hand, so they’re decently filling — cut in half, they’re great for #leavethefishinthesea tacos (last image.)

As mentioned in earlier reviews, there’s no detectably marine flavor — mostly #sweetdreamsaremadeofgrease breading and a hint of pepper (although Chinese cooking has formed an association between white pepper and fish in my mind, so it somehow works.) The batter crisped up perfectly in my toaster oven at home, as well as the office air fryer (bonus: no odious smell in communal kitchens!) Be prepared for oil, as the fillets will release lots of it.

I think the $4.99 price tag is reasonable given the novelty of this product. In my opinion, the beefless bulgogi ($4.49) is still Trader Joe’s best mock meat to date, but this was good enough to merit a repurchase.

kyu Thank you! I wanted to top them off with avocado, but they were already unmanageably full! Guess I need to look for bigger tortillas next time :-) 2 likesReply
