It's probably a good thing that I don't live any closer than 2 hours from The Chicago Diner. If I did, then I'd definitely lack the self control to restrain myself from subsisting on a diet consisting soley of vegan milkshakes and entrees from The Chicago Diner.

This Radical Reuben sandwich is incredible! Beautiful marbled rye bread bookends onions, peppers, sauerkraut, and a generous helping of corned beef-style seitan. The filling is piled high, and can be topped with vegan Teese cheese (highly recommended).

The Chicago Diner has been serving vegetarian food since before it was cool (Meat Free Since '83 is their slogan). They've definitely perfected their craft over the decades. Everything I've had there has been excellent.

I did buy the cookbook last time I was at The Chicago Diner, but I've never attempted to make this at home as the recipe intimidates me 😂

tamiapple Oh yum! My favorite dish from this fantastic spot😍3 likesReply
acastillon @tamiapple yes this is my favorite item from there as well! Have you tried other dishes too? I've only been twice for dinner and once for brunch, so there is much more that I would like to try 😋1 likeReply
tamiapple I’m such a creature of habit - I order the same thing every time I’m there! 😂 It sounds like @berryveganplanet might have a recommendation (or two). 😊👍2 likesReply
acastillon @tamiapple you and me both! I got the Reuben both times 😂 Also, @rosieb33 got the spicy chick'n twice in a row as well! 😆2 likesReply
tamiapple Have you & @rosieb been to Native Foods? Their Reuben is fab & their Chick’n Run sandwich is beyond delish 😊👍2 likesReply
acastillon @tamiapple ooh thanks for the recommendations! We did make it to the Native Foods in the Loop this time last year, but we have not yet tried their Reuben or the Chick'n Run. Excited to try those though :)

I might be going to Native Foods again next weekend . . . hoping to hit the Art Institute. There was an advertisement for Oatly vegan soft serve at the Cubs game, so I hope to track that down too 🍦 😋2 likesReply
tamiapple Nice! Oatly soft serve @ Wrigley? Fabulous! And I haven’t been to the Art institute since before the pandemic, though I’m planning to go with friends next month - there are a few great shows - which are you planning to see? 1 likeReply
acastillon @tamiapple yeah I asked around and no one at the Cubs game knew about the Oatly soft serve, but now that I've had an opportunity to research it looks like I missed out at Wrigley! I checked the locator, looks like there is a place called Stand Up Burgers that comes up in the Loop . . . so I'll do more investigating to see if it is really available there :) 🍦

acastillon @tamiapple ooh and hope you enjoy your visit to the Art Institute next month! I wouldn't mind seeing the Dalí exhibit. Other than that, I don't know a ton about art so I'm mainly looking forward to the painting from Ferris Bueller lol (A Sunday on La Grande Jatte). Nighthawks, The Blue Guitar, American Gothic, and the Van Gogh self portrait would be cool to see too. If you've got any recommendations I'm all ears! 🎨1 likeReply
tamiapple Sounds like you have a great itinerary planned. Nothing better than time spent with Seurat, Hopper, Wood, Et al. Generally, my favorite thing to do at The Art Institute is to begin at the Modern Wing, then meander through the galleries without a plan. Having said that, i would feel like I’d missed out if I didn’t stop and visit Gerhard Richter’s Woman Descending the Staircase & Self-Portrait by Max Beckmann. We’re going to see the Dali show, too(!), next month, though I’m super excited to see the Kwame Brathwaite show. There is so much to see, I hope you enjoy 😊1 likeReply
acastillon @tamiapple ah - sorry somehow I totally missed your comment ☹️ Did you make it to the Dalí show? If so, I'm curious to hear all about it! 🎨 🖌️1 likeReply
tamiapple Thanks! Yes I did! I’m hoping to post a review or two this weekend! 😊👍1 likeReply

acastillon @tamiapple cool! Glad you made it, will be excited to see how you liked it 🎨 🖌️Reply
berryveganplanet They have the best vegan milkshakes! So glad you enjoyed your meals there!! We love this place! 3 likesReply
acastillon @berryveganplanet yes the milkshakes are great eh? If you have other dishes from there that you would recommend, I am totally interested!2 likesReply
berryveganplanet The last time we were there I had the gyros plate and I loved it!! Hubby had the Portabella Truffle melt which he also enjoyed very much! I’ve also had the smoked tofu club (delish!), Thai Basil Stir Fry (also a winner), avocado tostadas for something on the lighter side and the nachos I would also recommend! The 2 dishes we tried that we knew we probably wouldn’t order again were the Soul Bowl (a bit bland) and thee Cuban sandwich 🥪 (too greasy) otherwise that place usually doesn’t disappoint!! Strawberry 🍓 shake is hubbys fav and I love the Rishi Chai Latte!! I just realized we haven’t been since before the pandemic 😷 and that’s why I don’t have any reviews on here since I’ve only been a member for a little over a year 😁! I should go back to my photos from about 4-5 years back and review the dishes we tried!1 likeReply
berryveganplanet I take that back we did go once in Oct 20211 likeReply
acastillon @berryveganplanet your info is super helpful, thank you! Next time I go, I plan to go out of my comfort zone and get something different :)

Amazing that you have only been on abillion for a year, you have so many reviews! Great idea about finding old photos to review, I think I have a picture of the shake I got there back in 2017 :)1 likeReply
berryveganplanet Your so welcome!! I love trying new dishes even though when I find something I like I tend to want to stick with it too!
This way we can review more dishes here!
I feel like I’ve been in here for way longer too! Feels like family this plant 🌱 based platform!1 likeReply
berryveganplanet @acastillon I posted the dishes we had from Oct of 21’ minus one (I think my friend had a seasonal item and we don’t remember what it was 🤣)! It turns out hubby had the Titanic BLT burger 🍔 that day, but I know he has had the Portobella Truffle melt before too! Loved both! 1 likeReply
acastillon @berryveganplanet way cool! I'm gonna go read those reviews now! 🍔1 likeReply

acastillon @beckyyy yes it was so great! So fortunate to have this restaurant relatively close by :)

P.S. you going to Coachella next weekend?3 likesReply
beckyyy Yup! Preparations are underway. We’ll have a full house in a week from Thursday. I’ve been a bit isolated out here so I’m really looking forward to seeing friends as well as bands 😊. I guess Mother Nature heard too bc it’s supposed to get up to 90 this weekend 😩1 likeReply
acastillon @beckyyy cool! Glad you are able to go. Hope you have fun and that working the festival goes smoothly for your boyfriend. Great that you can reconnect with your friends too. Anyone you are looking forward to seeing? Hope you get to see Björk, if you are into her. She's still one of my top 10 favorite shows (I never thought I'd get to see her, but was super lucky to see her on the Volta tour).1 likeReply
beckyyy Thank you! Most likely my bf won’t have to work during the actual show (crosses fingers). He’s been working long days 6 days a week for a bit now but it’s always a big crunch before the show no matter what. I’ve not seen Bjork before but have heard that she always has a magical show so I’m looking forward to it! There’s some good stuff - old and new this year. Looking forward to seeing Horsegirl - one of my fave records of 22 😊1 likeReply
acastillon @beckyyy I hope he doesn't have to work during the actual show! Just checked out some Horsegirl and it is great. Enjoy and hope you keep cool! ☀️ 🌴 🎶1 likeReply

acastillon @kyu totally! This sandwich was a work or art. 🥪 Hope you had a good time in Hawaii!3 likesReply
acastillon @theg0at666 it was great, I am thankful to live relatively close to this restaurant. I've toyed with the idea of trying to make it myself, but I've never actually attempted it...
