Mission Foods

If you're like me, you might be thinking . . . "Corn tortillas!? Blech! So dry and tasteless. And they always fall apart in a taco. Hard pass." I am here to assuage those fears for these Mission white corn tortillas.

Are they as good as flour tortillas? No. But, for people like me that are trying to keep their sodium down, these are an excellent way to accomplish that goal and still enjoy tacos. These are surprisingly soft, and hold together nicely.

Unrelated to vegan food, but happy birthday David Bowie!

knorthway Love me some white corn tortillas. I like using them for taco casseroles. Side note: I took a picture in this same spot as Bowie a few months ago while visiting London. It’s in Soho and right next to it is a Bowie themed bar called ‘Starman’. Sadly someone painted the bricks white so it looks a little different now…2 likesReply
acastillon @knorthway ah - great idea to use them for a taco casserole! I hadn't thought of that, but I'm going to look for some recipes now. Thanks for the tip!

Way cool that you found the location of the actual building, that's rad! Bummer that they repainted, but cool that they kept it Bowie related. Did you check out any other music themed sites?

I found the same up in Manchester . . . some music-related sites were the same as back in the day (The Salford Lads Club from The Smiths), but others had changed (like The Haçienda of New Order fame).2 likesReply
knorthway I didn’t make it to Manchester, just Chesterfield and some of the English countryside. I of course went to Abbey Road, too. I pulled a Paul and crossed the famous crosswalk barefooted. 2 likesReply
acastillon @knorthway cool, that sounds like a great trip! Nice that you got to visit Abbey Road too :)1 likeReply

acastillon @troosti yes! Glad to find people on here that like this record too :)1 likeReply
beckyyy ⚡️such a good record 1 likeReply
acastillon @beckyyy totally right!? Dude was so far ahead of his time that this record still doesn't sound dated even 50 years after it came out. I had totally forgotten about the "TO BE PLAYED AT MAXIMUM VOLUME" note on the back of the album sleeve lol. Was just watching the excellent "The Last Five Years" documentary, and that reminded me that his birthday was this month.

Wish I would have gotten to see him, but I don't recall him coming by California much by the time I was of concert-going age. You ever catch a show of his?2 likesReply
beckyyy No, I never did. Unfortunately my folks weren’t into music and I didn’t dig into music from the past until I was in college and broke hahahaha.
Arcade Fire (which, well is another topic ☹️) headlined Coachella after Reflektor came out and I watched crying hoping that Bowie would come out as a guest for that track. He didn’t of course but I had somehow convinced myself he would hahahaha. I sure which I had seen him at some point! 1 likeReply
acastillon @beckyyy oh man, that's a bummer he didn't come out during that Arcade Fire set. Makes sense that he would have, since he had done that before at other shows. Yeah disappointing about Win :(

Who all else did you see that year? Did you catch Neutral Milk Hotel? Glad you got to go. 2008 was the last Coachella I was lucky enough to make it to, but I was fortunate to have gone to a few other different years :)1 likeReply
beckyyy It was a really good show! Yes, caught Neutral Milk Hotel. I confess I’m looking at the poster but I also saw at least a portion to all of OutKast, The Knife, Replacements, Broken Bells, Neko Case (she was at golden hour and it was just amazing), Bryan Ferry, Afghan Whigs, Jagwar Ma, Waxahatchee, Wye Oak, The Preatures, Gabba Gabba Heys (our friends Ramones cover band hahahaha), Lorde, MGMT, Empire of the Sun, Chvrches, Future Islands, Ty Segall, Bombay Bicycle Club, Holy Ghost, Foxygen, Beck, Temples, Pet Shop Boys, Toy Dolls, Superchunk, Daughter, Flight Facilities, Poolside, Surfer Blood and Classix and Disclosure. I imagine we went to Beady Eye but I don’t recall it. We saw Naked and Famous, The Cult and Foster the People at the Fox so I think we skipped them on the field - but maybe we caught Naked and Famous again? Think we missed Kate Nash and Fatboy Slim.

Wow, comparing that one to the one that dropped yesterday makes me a bit sad. There’s at least 5 things I want to see each day but some years past were insaneeeee 😊

What was your fave year?1 likeReply
acastillon @beckyyy Whoa, you saw a ton of good sets there!  Those days were packed with good stuff.  Rad that you saw The Knife . . . I don't recall there being very many chances to see them in the US.  Nice to catch one of the first Replacements reunion shows too.  That was cool when Coachella started doing the Fox shows, that frees up a chance to see someone different at the festival and helps prevent those dreaded time conflicts. How cool that your friend's band played, that must have been a blast! Had you been before of since 2014?

I was fortunate to have gone 2004-2008 (not all days though, couldn't afford it lol).  2004 was my favorite of those years, got to see so many of my favorites :)  Radiohead, Pixies, Kraftwerk, Belle & Sebastian, Le Tigre, Cursive, Air (at the golden hour).  2006 was great too, Daft Punk in the tent was unforgettable.  Portishead had been on my wish list to see for like a decade before finally catching them in 2008.  I can't go to shows anymore due to bad hearing damage, but I am grateful to have these memories.  Awesome that you had a good time, and I am glad the festival is still going so that other people to have these great experiences :)1 likeReply
acastillon @beckyyy oh and how cool that Neko Case got the golden hour timeslot. Perfect time for her. That had me pulling up my favorite song of hers . . . which I think fits abillion.

beckyyy Those were such amazing lineups! That’s so rad that you saw Daft Punk in the tent and so so so many good bands!!! I wanted to go during those times but couldn’t afford it. I’ve been going since 2011 as my boyfriend works for the festival.

Im sorry that you’re not able to go to shows any longer. I’ve went to drastically less since the pandemic began and I miss it terribly. It’s great, though, that there’s now so many performances that are live streamed or taped. It’s not exactly the same but still amazing - and gives access to bands that can’t travel to your area. The album shows are cool too; I saw a Jimmy Eat World Clarity performance in 2020 or 2021 and that was so nice 😊 1 likeReply
beckyyy It was beautiful. I just adore her and really all of the New Pornographers. That song is lovely! My fave:

acastillon @beckyyy oh man, that's a great Neko song too! Regretfully I've never seen the New Pornographers or Neko solo :( The only time I saw her was singing backup for John Mellencamp at Hardly Strictly Bluegrass in SF back in 2007. A total surprise, I didn't know she was going to be there (I was only there early to get a good spot for Jeff Tweedy). I'll take it though! Glad you got to see her in such a memorable setting.

Depending on your interest level, her appearance is one of my favorite ones on the great (but sadly now defunct) podcast below.

acastillon @beckyyy yes so lucky to have caught Daft Punk. So cool that your boyfriend works for the festival! Hope you enjoy this year. 🌴 ☀️ 🌴

Yes you said it on the streaming! It is a great way to still get to experience shows. I remember those Jimmy Eat World streams, that was cool that they played full records. Glad you got to catch your favorite Clarity :)1 likeReply
