$5.30 This gets 5 stars across the board because it is perfection itself. This could be one of the best vegan BBQ pork buns I’ve ever had. Firstly, the bun comes beautifully presented in its little steaming basket right to your table. You bite into the divinely fluffy bun and immediately hit the Chinese 5 spice of the rich BBQ “pork” filling. Delicious is an understatement. These are scrumptious and easily the best entrée here 🤤

As I suffer from debilitating decision-paralysis, especially when presented with an entirely vegan menu of more than 60 options, I asked Mother Chu to choose an entrée for me that wasn’t too expensive and on the healthier side. She understood the assignment and came out with these steamed rather than fried dim sims. They came with a little crunchy cabbage slaw and some sweet plum sauce. Mother Chu offered to add some chilli crisp too, which I’d never turn down. The chilli crisp tasted just like the addictive Lao Gan Ma brand but it was homemade. Each dim sim was filled with a mixture I couldn’t quite place but was delicious. A solid entrée choice.

$7.80 This was a delightful surprise! When I ordered this I envisioned some kind of red, spicy, watery clear soup with a few bits of peppercorns in it, but what came out was a ruddy brown, hot, thick, spicy soup loaded with slices of shiitake mushrooms, tofu, onion, and vegan meat. It was thick in a gelatinous way which can take some getting used to if you’ve only ever eaten watery clear soups. Absolutely delicious and somewhat filling!

$6.80 Look at how perfect this lettuce leaf was! It was cut into a perfect circle and made a very steady, crunchy boat for the delicious vegan minced pork. They must have thickened the mince and sauce with some kind of starch slurry as it didn’t drip everywhere with juice when you bit into it, which made it much more convenient to eat and first-date safe! It was delicious, but for the price I felt it was very steep- I was expecting at least 3, not just one little San Choy Pow for that. Still, it was nice to try it once, as I haven’t seen vegan San Choy Pow in all my 8 years being vegan until I came here.

$5.80 Freshly boiled, hot, and generously seasoned with salt Let me present this Japanese dish to ironically tell you how old-school Taiwanese this place is 😆 As soon as you walk in the door you are immediately hit with the strong fragrance of starch and fried oils which seem to wrap around you like a comforting hug from an old relative. Mother Chu herself is quick to appear and greet you with a genuine smile behind her face mask and glasses, though she didn’t stuff a menu in your hands and demand an order from you like at other restaurants. My friend and I were in deep conversation for 15 minutes after sitting down yet she waited patiently for it to die down before approaching, as she said she didn’t want to interrupt 🥹 I really appreciated this. The menu here is EXTENSIVE. Everything can be made vegan, with honey being the only non-vegan ingredient used in this restaurant. Since I suffer from decision paralysis at just 6 options let alone 60+, I asked Mother Chu to choose some dishes for me. She humoured me and collaborated with my friend to choose two surprise entrées for me as she wanted to give me the best but wasn’t sure what I would like. Although the restaurant was empty with no music when we arrived at opening time, it quickly livened up and became full. At no point were we pressured at all to finish up and leave. This kind of atmosphere alone will bring me back again and again.
