If I see chimichurri, I'm in! This vegan jerky is a bit tough, but it's really not what I'd call jerky like Louisville Vegan Jerky Co. is. I like to treat HB jerky like any other seitan. I fan fried these little rectangles and served them alongside buttery rice and corn. I topped it with Red Eye Hot Sauce jalapeno crema for a bit of heat and more flavor. It's so cool how The Herbivorous Butcher has such a wide variety of vegan meats. They're all flavored differently as well, so you can really hone in what you need for specific recipes. @jonok has been wanting a Cuban sandwich, so when he saw this Cuban pork he had to buy it! It's also nice that these meats stay fresh for quite a while if you keep them sealed. Once you open the package try to use it quickly though. Cutting these into strips then frying them on the cast iron wirh Tofurky slices was such a great idea! The Daiya oat milk swiss melted so wonderfully on the sandwich as well. I really love the seasoning in this Cuban pork. I don't have much to compare it to in pre-vegan days, but I enjoyed it nonetheless. We stopped into the Herbivorous Butcher last weekend and @jonok went a little wild! They had so many good vegan meats for sale. The "butcher" sold us on these ribs. They're in a huli huli marinade made up of pineapple juice, soy sauce, brown sugar, sesame oil, and other seasonings. These ribs come sliced into 4 strips. The marinade on this was really nice. The pineapple and brown sugar allow the seitan to caramelize really nicely. The morning of St. Patrick's Day, @jonok and I were brainstorming breakfast ideas. We had this corned beef from the Herbivorous Butcher that needed to be used up. We came up with a Reuben breakfast sandwich! We tried up this corned beef for a couple minutes, then Jono made a JUST Egg patty with Cleveland kraut and Violife mozzarella melted together inside. We also made thousand island dressing using Follow your Heart mayo. This corned beef was perfect with all of the other ingredients. It's pretty similar to their bacon, but has different spices and is a bit thinner. This is a really nice classic sandwich. HB's hot sandwiches are always in a panini style, so I was wondering how they'd do that with meatballs. I think it worked out! The meatballs are really meaty and have those classic sausage spices. The marinara is packed with basil which is what I like to see! It also has their provolone cheese. It didn't completely melt, but it was soft and creamy. The Herbivorous Butcher is making pizzas for a limited time! Right now they have "Lemon Pepper Chicken" and "Meat Lovers". The Lemon Pepper Chicken has white béchamel Sauce, caramelized onions, arugula, and balsamic glaze. I used to love white sauce pizzas, so I thought I'd give it a try. I really enjoyed the béchamel sauce they used. It was nice and creamy so cheese wasn't needed. They were very generous with the chunks of lemon pepper chicken. There was also a lot of caramelized onion. The caramelized onion and balsamic made the pizza a bit too sweet for my taste. Maybe if I added some red pepper flakes, the spice would help balance it out. The crust was really amazing. We bought these for our Labor Day camping trip, but never got around to grilling them. They were just as satisfying as a quick dinner between work and a concert! These brats are huge, but not unmanageable. I really enjoyed their flavor! They went well with ketchup (sorry Chicago), Dijon mustard, and relish. I usually like diced onions too, but we were out. @jonok usually makes our seitan chicken, but this week we just picked up some from HB while we were getting brats for the cabin. I found that theirs is a bit denser. Since he uses the HB Cookbook, the seasoning is similar. These don't look too appetizing, but they are easily cut up into strips to be battered or cooked as is. Once they get a little color on them, they're much more appealing. I think this is the most popular reoccurring special at The Herbivorous Butcher and I finally got to try it! It has their roast beef, smoked Gouda, mushroom mayo, marinated mushrooms, and kale on multigrain bread. It was so delicious, I really understand all the hype! The mushroom mayo was really flavorful and distributed the umami flavor throughout the sandwich. Usually the bread isn't anything too special, but I really liked this different multigrain! This week the Herbivorous Butcher is featuring two hot paninis, one for each team that made it to the Superbowl. This one represents Philadelphia. It's a pretty simple sandwich with their seitan roast beef, queso, onions, and peppers, but I liked it more. The queso made it so deliciously cheesy and added a bit of heat as well. I guess I'll be rooting for Philadelphia this weekend because the sandwich won out for me.
