I looked up vegan spots before traveling to Chicago and was excited to try Fons. Their presentation is spot on. Cute logo and colored dough. The chorizo empanada was my favorite of the 2 I purchased. It has a bit of spice and a potato crunch. It is made with a natural dough and has 6 grams of protein and 1.5 fat.

I looked up vegan spots before traveling to Chicago and was excited to try Fons. Their presentation is spot on. Cute logo and colored dough. The mushroom empanada was unevenly heated and a bit too salty for my liking. If I ever get it again I would try with the garlic sauce.

this tasted kind of like a pizza pocket! packed with mozzarella, tomatoes, and encased in a tomato dough, this margherita empanada was definitely one to try. it came out very hot so i totally burned my mouth 😭 i was supposed to get the andean empanada, but i ended up with the margherita when i opened my food and i don’t necessarily mind. i was hoping to try the andean, but this was a nice surprise. #empanadas #empanada #veganempanada #chicago #veganchicago #veganinillinois #pizza #margherita #tomato #tomatoes

this one was probably my least favorite out of the empanadas i tried here. it was a bit dry, and i didn’t find the flavor particularly impactful or memorable. i feel like it may have been a little underseasoned? not sure. i think it is supposed to be spicy as well, but i wasn’t able to pick up on it. given that, it definitely wasn’t bad, and i still enjoyed eating it. just a little overpriced for how much i ended up liking it. #empanadas #empanada #veganempanada #chicago #veganchicago #veganinillinois #jackfruit

this one was another empanada that i liked! (it’s the green one) it was packed with smoky, garlicky mushrooms, and the dough was apparently spinach-based. it was very hot when i got it, so be forewarned. i enjoyed the mushrooms, but found the empanada overall to be a little dry. luckily, there was a delicious garlic sauce (definitely recommend ordering)! #empanadas #empanada #veganempanada #chicago #veganchicago #veganinillinois #mushroom #mushrooms #mushroomlover

This sauce is kind of the star of Fons. On their website I see that you can buy a 12oz jar for $10.95. I'm not sure how much we paid for this smaller serving. It was the perfect amount for our four savory empanadas. This sauce is nice and creamy and of course is garlicky! This is another great savory option! It has Cuban style shredded jackfruit that packs a lot of flavor. It's in a chia seed dough. They use jackfruit really well here. It's marinated nicely and makes a great texture of the empanada filling. Again, great with garlic sauce! I think this is another popular flavor. This is another empanada marked as spicy. It has slow-simmered onions and jackfruit in a chipotle and garlic sauce. The dough gets its nice sunflower yellow color from carrots! This was one of my favorites. It has house-made jalapeño chili with beans and sweet potato. The activated charcoal dough is really striking! This is the other sweet option, and I'd recommend it over the chocolate banana. It's like an apple pie, although I still think it needs something to dip it in. The filling is gooey making it less dry. The dough is colored with butterfly pea flower. I was excited to try this flavor, but unfortunately it was my least favorite. It was pretty dry and I was hoping the chocolate would be more melty. I also would have liked more banana. It ended up just being a mush of slight banana and cocoa flavor. I just noticed that there were peanuts in it, I don't remember tasting them! The savory empanadas were definitely better and I think part of that has to do with the incredible garlic sauce that helps them be less dry.
