I am always impressed and hopeful when I read about people like conservationist Sim Khmao who I discover has been working hard for 20 years to save this endangered species- the Siamese Crocodile.

Published by Fauna & Flora:
‘In the remote wetlands of Cambodia’s Cardamom Mountains, lives one of the world’s oldest species - the Siamese crocodile.
These extraordinary creatures are a true reminder of our planet’s ancient past, having existed for around 85 million years.
They are also one of the most misunderstood species.
Despite the fearsome reputation of some of their close cousins, Siamese crocodiles are non-aggressive, highly elusive and notably shy. They tend to keep their distance from humans, quietly blending into their wild homes.
They are also dedicated parents - when baby crocodilians are ready to hatch they will chirp from inside their eggs, and once born, they are gently carried around by their mother in her mouth or on her back.
But today, these rare reptiles are in danger of fading into extinction.
And there's one man who knows that better than most.
Meet Sim Khmao, a community warden who has devoted his life to bringing these ancient creatures back from the brink. For over 20 years, he has been working tirelessly to protect them.
He spends his days patrolling the wetlands, armed only with a kayak, GPS, and his sharp instincts, keeping an eye out for signs of threats to the crocodiles or their home.
It’s not always an easy job - some days his patrols take him far from home and he sleeps deep in the jungle. During the rainy season, flooding can make patrolling even more difficult.
But the long days and nights have been worth it.
Earlier this year, Sim Khmao and his fellow wardens discovered five wild crocodile nests, producing 60 hatchlings - an incredible sign that the population is beginning to recover.
But the hard work is far from over.
There are thought to be just 400 Siamese crocodiles left.
We must make sure wardens like Sim Khmao have the tools to do their job.’
