We are facing the worst situation we have been through since we started our animal Sanctuary.
WE ARE BEING EVICTED, losing half of the Sanctuary with no possibility of relocating the animals on the remaining land.
We have 3 months to raise all the funds, prepare the new land and move there.

A few years ago we started a campaign to move to another land. In 2018 we found a property that complied with the demanding measures required by the Community of Madrid. We started the procedures and stopped the campaign when we saw how they were being delayed, which broke all our plans.

In 2020, in the middle of Covid, the owners of one of the two estates that make up the current Sanctuary wanted to evict us and we told them that we could not leave, that the only land that the Community of Madrid authorised us to move to was still in the process of obtaining permits. The owners didn't care and started the eviction process.

We have been fighting for 3 years, trying to get the permits. But we didn't succeed, we didn't get there in time. 5 years of paperwork and stress, for nothing.

We trusted the Community of Madrid and we trusted other people. And because we were naive and we wanted to believe in a world that does not leave animals aside, we are in a terrible situation.

And so we now have an eviction date:
September 21st, 2023.

We have been looking for another piece of land and we have found one that complies with the demanding measures requested by the Livestock Department of the Community of Madrid. And it is also totally suitable so that the inhabitants of Santuario Vegan can finally have the environment and space they deserve, because we have been stuck on the current space for many years.

The new land also meets the needs of the extreme and urgent situation: It already has certain facilities, although outdated and not for all inhabitants. It has a perimeter fence, water and electricity. And it is big enough to move the sanctuary and to be able to rescue more animals, which is not feasible on the current land.

Still, we have to make many adjustments to the new land. We have to make enclosures for the different species and animals that live in the sanctuary. And we can't do that once we are there, it must already be done and prepared for them when we get there. That is to say, all the animals cannot be together in one enclosure.

Although we are being evicted, we continue to fulfil our obligations as tenants with the property by timely paying the rent every month. Since 2015 we have paid every month without failing once, even in extreme situations like the Covid that turned the world upside down. For that reason we are going to try to buy some time, as the property we are going to go to will be available at the end of the year.

We have now decided that we are not going to depend on third parties again, because we must guarantee a safe home forever. This time the land must belong to the animals, to the Sanctuary. So that they can never be thrown out, never be left stranded, so that the Sanctuary will last forever, so that no one can ever harm them, because the land belongs to them. Because it is THEIR HOME.

We are a humble NGO, so the purchase will be in instalments, which we have already agreed. It will be a down payment of €50,000 and the rest will be paid in instalments over 5 years. The final terms are sketched out, but we will finalise them during this month.

The facilities already in place help us a lot to reduce the number of boxes (dormitories) and the time to leave, but still 300 animals, many of them very large, live safely in the sanctuary. And there are animals with very many special needs. There are 5 of us living in the sanctuary and taking care of the animals 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

We are perhaps the sanctuary with the most dependent and vulnerable inhabitants. Some, like Violeta did, need care at all times, every day. We are always there for them.

In total, we need approximately €190,000 to move to new land: €50,000 is the down payment for the deferred purchase of the farm (as the Foundation, and therefore the animals, will be the owners of the new land).
90.000€ for fencing, 30.000€ for the installation of electricity and water, and 30.000€ for the dunghill and fodder store.

This is the minimum necessary, although we will try to get more to do more things, such as an infirmary, hospitalisation area, etc.

Because the more help we receive, the better the conditions in which this new stage of the Sanctuary will begin.

In the current land we have hardly been able to rescue any animals in recent years. And that has taken its toll on us, even on a personal level. We want to save lives, we need to rescue more. It is the best reward for giving our lives to this cause. Because our commitment is not only to take care of them until the end, but to save as many lives as possible.

Sanctuaries are a fundamental part of the future of this planet, if we want it to be a just world for animals too. A place worth living in, a place that anyone would choose to live in.

And Santuario Vegan is a fundamental part of that future.

We count on you and thank you for your support. Both the people who care for the animals and fight every day to obtain the necessary resources and means to be able to do so, and each of the inhabitants who live or have lived in the Sanctuary, and whose memory will accompany us forever in our fight for a better world.

rebeccaevelewis Let’s join together to help these beautiful souls! 💖 If everyone who sees this could donate something, anything, it would help. There’s even the option of joining Teaming and donating as little as €1 a month, which is nothing for most of us, but if everyone did it, it could raise a substantial amount. We are donating monthly., and will send more now. For the animals! 💚1 likeReply
