Review of Pepper-Salt Lion’s Mane Mushroom at Gongfu Bao by leratonsaveur

My friend and I shared this dish on vegan night (every Wednesday at Gongfu) and it was a delicious take on pepper-salt tofu!

The mushroom chunks were huge, tender, and juicy. There was just the right amount of batter - not overly #sweetdreamsaremadeofgrease, but just enough. The dipping sauce and fried basil are perfect pairings to add a little bit of extra flavour.

It was $17 but worth the money IMO - it’s a large portion given how big and meaty each chunk is. Plus lion’s mane mushrooms aren’t exactly cheap. I felt I got good value for my money and was happy to support Gongfu making such an effort to help people eat vegan.

svraphael88 Great value and portion for sure! I get this much at a farmers market of lions mane and it is like $15 and nothing is done to it like this. Awesome! 3 likesReply
leratonsaveur Oh wow, when you put it that way, I might have to adjust the value rating on this. Good point!3 likesReply
david- Dried lions mane is much cheaper though, and from what i have experienced, restaurants use the dried kind 1 likeReply
leratonsaveur Really? Interesting. Does it rehydrate well? These were super fresh and juicy tasting so I’ll be amazed if they were dried and rehydrated 1 likeReply
david- They rehydrate amazingly. Only thing that differs them from a fresh one is the darker color 2 likesReply
svraphael88 Interesting. I don't know if I've ever seen dried lions mane at an Asian grocery store or any grocery store...I'll have to keep an eye out! Thanks for the info!2 likesReply
david- At least here in Europe, basically every Asian store carries them!2 likesReply
