I tried an onigiri from Konscious a few months back and did not have a good experience; I used the thaw method and the rice was a bit crusty and fell apart. It was disappointing as the item was so expensive. Since then, I’ve seen so many good reviews for their products; when I found a discount program to return the price of one item with the purchase of two (essentially a BOGO from the company), I knew it was worth another try.
Since I don’t have a microwave, I thawed these rolls in a hot water bath. This method worked well, as the rice was a much better texture! Visually, the rolls were nice. I was concerned that frozen and thawed avocado would be odd, but it was fine; of course the pieces are rather small, though. The vegan tuna was mostly a visual placeholder as it didn’t bring much flavor to the roll. I never had a fish based tuna roll like this so I cannot vouch for the texture in terms of its likeness. I don’t think I’d enjoy it in as sashimi but it is fine in the roll.
These products are quite expensive and I actually really enjoy making maki rolls at home so I don’t anticipate purchasing these often, but I would consider purchasing again if I found them on sale/discount as they are a fun and tasty snack or part of a meal to have on hand. Really glad I tried this and used a different one of the preparation methods listed. Looking forward to trying the other roll I purchased/got.
