This consisted of tofu puffs, 🐷-free ham, 🥕, 🥦, cauliflower, red and green bell peppers, cabbage, coconut, potatoes, taro, green beans, and onions. I've had this before with rice, but opted for smooth, soft, and slippery rice noodles this time. This bao bun by Van Hanh was just ok, especially when compared to the superb bao buns I’ve tried at XLB Restaurant here in Portland. The presentation could have been better, as it was served in cellophane wrapping and tasted like it could have been steamed longer. The dough was a bit on the dry side, lacking that pillowy effect of other heavenly bao buns I’ve tried. It is filled with tofu, mixed veggies, taro, beans, and vegan ham, and aside from my complaint about the buns dryness, the filling itself was tasty. This was my first time eating at Van Hanh, an entirely vegan Asian-fusion restaurant located inside a 2-story house. I enjoyed this Chow Mein entree, which is listed on the menu as having “vegetables, tofu, and vegan meats”, so there was an element of mystery to it. I think the other vegan meats were strips of tempeh but I’m not positive and didn’t inquire. The vegetables included broccoli, green beans, carrots, onions, and cabbage I believe. My only constructive criticism would be that they consider using less single use plastic and paper plates for patrons who dine in.
