I returned to Small Hours and was happy to hear they had this Seed to Surf enoki mushroom "snow crab" back in stock. I knew I'd like it more than the white fish made from celeriac. The enoki mushroom has such a distinct texture. It's stringy and meaty. It soaked up the flavor of the oil a lot more than the celeriac did. This oily little snack was nice on top of bread paired with a light, fruity wine. Small Hours has a huge variety of tinned seafood. I think it's an odd idea for a wine bar because it really limits proper pairing to white wines. Also tinned fish does not sound very appealing or something you'd buy at a restaurant, but I've never been one to say I know the carnist mind. I was happy to see that they have two vegan options from Seed to Surf. I wanted to try the snow crab made from enoki, but they were out of it so we went with the whitefish made from celeriac. This vegan whitefish is served with bread and some kind of little bit of kelp or other sea vegetable. The whitefish itself wasn't very flavorful. It was just slightly smokey, oily, and not too fishy. The texture is fairly firm. I thought it'd be able to be torn apart like jackfruit, but it doesn't have that shredded texture. I'm definitely more interested in the snow crab, even just based off the texture. This was a dish we added on at the end of our bottle. I enjoyed it more than I thought I would! I paired much better with our Francesco Cirelli Montepulciano d'Abruzzo than the other food we ordered. I'm sure it would be really nice with a white wine as well. The squash is roasted perfectly and that makes it so creamy. The hint of maple compliments the natural sweetness of the squash well. The arugula adds nice peppery notes and I always love pepitas! A vegan staple at any wine bar! @jonok and I enjoyed snacking on these on New Year's Eve while we enjoyed part of our evening at this new hi-fi wine bar. The audio system was amazing and it had a really cool vibe! I'm excited to go back. The olives seem similar to castelvetrano olives. They had a nice firm texture and a mild but salty flavor. They're topped with lemon peel to give it a nice fresh taste. We had them with red wine (Montepulciano d'Abruzzo from Francesco Cirelli), but most of the food here is definitely better paired with white. These olives come on their own without bread.
