It's a good habit to always eat salad before lunch/dinner. Dinner will usually consist of
carbs and/or protien but getting some essential nutrients in your body first is a wise idea, just in case your occasional main course is lacking in that area.
When you use a non-fatty salad dressing (like balsamic vinegarette) the salad will have your stomach feeling like you just ate nothing afterwards, so still plenty of room for the main course.
