Just updated my post from earlier today, as I didn't see this week's new @abillion impact campaign!! Santuario Vegan Point is actually the last sanctuary I visited - just a few months ago in August 2025!! Also added some more photos of the beautiful residents. 💛
The first person that came to mind thinking about vegan inspo, is May del Castillo, founder of @santuarioveganpoint located on #lapalma island, Spain. About two years ago, I came across a social media post by Heura featuring selected animal sanctuaries and began to follow this sanctuary's social networks. Since then, the inspiration hasn't stopped flowing! May is incredible - in addition to founding her own sanctuary focused on our feathered friends seven years ago, she is an integral part of Desafio22, a non-profit promoting transitioning to veganism and helping people with a 22-day challenge to eat plant-based. She also produced a series of 50 one-minute videos answering those common excuses we hear from others for not transitioning to vegan and most recently, published a proposal to expand the vegan lexicon for Spanish-speakers, introducing a Manifesto to create the word "veganario" to denote vegan sanctuaries that adhere to vegan principles comprehensively throughout their operations as a forever home for rescued animals!! (Stay tuned for the English version coming soon).
Through her work and publications, I have grown and deepened my understanding of veganism and vegan activism, expanded my knowledge of vegan ingredients and nutrition, and challenged myself to find ways to be more compassionate.
Getting to meet May in person and see the sanctuary first-hand a few months ago was amazing!! Not only did I also get to meet my adoped grandson Rock (second photo) but got to
--experience the sanctuary environment and learning about all the thought she put into creating a chicken-friendly environment to promote their natural behavior.
--offer fresh green leaves to the featheted residents who ate them up! It was also dinner time so I got to see them happily eat up their food.
--taste some of the amazing recipies promoted by Desafio22 through a lovely picnic prepared by May.
--learn about their innovative Hügelkulture agriculture on their plot of land (her partner KRL's expertise) and got some home-grown veggies to take back to our vacation rental!
Thanks to May for all her inspiring work!! 💛
