This was my favorite dish out of all the ones we tried at Izakaya Masaka, a fully vegan Izakaya in Shibuya. Karaage is a frying technique, and karaage often refers to a dish of fried chicken, in this case however it was a vegan meat alternative that had been fried. The texture was really crunchy and the taste very savory, the yuzu mayo was really the chef kiss as it combined perfectly giving the dish a nice tanginess. Another really delicious meal from Izayaka Masaka, made with minced soy meat and soy sprouts. Nice taste and a small portion at a reasonable price. The whole place is vegan so it’s super easy to order and I’m happy to support it. Yummy vegan gyozas from Izakaya Masaka. You can tell from the picture how crispy and crunchy they were on the side they were fried on. The taste was good too. I’m honestly astonished by how perfectly food gets fried in Japan and these maitake mushrooms were no exception. Their super crunchy texture was mouthwatering and the taste was amazing. I really loved this restaurant which is super informal and small, in the basement floor of the Parco department store in Shibuya. It’s fully vegan and it’s well known, so be prepared to wait in line for sometime before eating, there are some seats outside so just be patient. A 20-30 minute wait is definitely worth a meal here. Incredible vegan #karaage made from deep fried soy meat 🤤 The generous smothering of tartar sauce was probably the “eggiest” sauce I’ve ever had. Complete with chunks of “egg” (Japanese style tartar sauce apparently contains finely chopped boiled egg). I wonder how they make it because this was so legit! The karaage was well spiced and so crispy. Only tiny negative is it wasn’t hot when it arrived, my partner’s was so I guess they were waiting for his. Very popular and cosy little vegan #izakaya on the basement level of Parco shopping mall in a maze of other eateries. These #gyoza were delicious. I love when they’re cooked like this with the light steamed pastry one side and the crispy fried “wings” on the other. Nice charred flavour. ¥800. #veganintokyo #tokyo
