Looked zen from the outside, but boy, I was not prepared for the cacophony of noises when I stepped in. I've always had the impression Hvala was quite veganfriendly so was surprised by the #mylk tax: S$0.20 for soy milk and S$1.00 for oat milk (Oatside). The economy must be weighing down on everyone. This cuppa was middling at best; I could hardly detect any smokiness of houjicha, which is a roasted green tea. Un-zen ambience aside this place is great for counting pebbles if you get a window seat by the low tables. #reviewwithaview #ofstones

Rice bowl topped with fried battered tofu, savoury sautéed mixed mushrooms including shiitake and enoki, edamame soybeans, fragrant crispy roasted rice, pickled daikon radish, shredded chilli pepper, and seaweed. 🍚🍄‍🟫🫛🌶️ Served with a teapot filled with konbu mushroom sencha dashi (savoury green tea broth) to be poured over the rice bowl. 🫖🍲 I have fond memories of eating ochazuke in Taiwan and Japan in the past, so I was happy to have a vegan version! Wished the tofu could have been seasoned for more flavour, but overall the dish was relatively tasty in a light, clean, and healthy way. Btw they have another vegan main in the menu at Odeon, also with tofu and mushrooms but alongside soba noodles. It is a little chewy inside (which reminds me of mochi) and a little crispy on the outside. Love that it’s not sweet , which makes it goes well with a scoop gelato or two and I chose the chrysanthemum one! . Warm chocolate brownie dotted with chopped walnuts, drizzled with in-house sauce (they said it was salted caramel but TBH it seemed like a generic thick sugar syrup to me) and topped with tuile thin wafer biscuit. 🍫 Personally found some parts of the brownie rather dry and crumbly, while some parts were nice and fudgy - maybe the secret was to let the gelato melt and moisten the brownie? 😂 Served with a scoop of goma black sesame or matcha level 1 intensity gelato by default (can top up for other flavours); I opted for the latter~ 🍵🍨 My non-veg mum kept commenting that she really liked the creamy matcha gelato which wasn't overly bitter! Thick shot of freshly-whisked matcha followed by mylk and housemade hojicha syrup, though sadly the layers couldn't be seen through this opaque cup haha. 🍵🥛 Appreciated that we could swap from fresh milk to #soymilk free-of-charge, or #oatmilk for additional $1~ Iced version available for additional $1.60. 🧊 My non-veg mum doesn't often get drinks when dining out, and I'm also not an avid café-hopper (contrary to popular belief 😬), but we needed to decompress after watching a theatre production about a difficult topic by Wild Rice nearby. She really enjoyed this drink and said it seemed like you truly get what you pay for, since it was of good quality, tasting rich and full-bodied without being overly bitter. Glad I'm able to spend on myself and my loved ones, and more importantly I'm glad we had this time and space to talk through the theatre production we had watched and how it related to us. Apologies to the customers who may have seen me weeping in the café, your gurl has been crying all over the whole of SG this year 🌝 Luckily we had a drink for me to rehydrate myself huh? Strong smoky roasted aroma with nutty caramel-like notes reminiscent of cocoa. 🫖🍨 I know matcha usually gets all the love, but I always have a soft spot for hojicha since I'm a fan of that dark chocolate kinda scent! Thankful that vegan options for gelato are available across the Hvala outlets, and that they aren't sad icy options but lusciously rich creamy ones. There's something about multi-layered lattes that is just super beautiful - look at those swirls and hues!! 🥹 This came with a thick shot of freshly-whisked matcha (best believe it kept me up all night; remind me never to consume caffeine in the evening again 🤡), followed by mylk and housemade goma syrup at the base. 🍵🥛🖤 Loved the added complexity in flavour profile that the black sesame syrup gave!
