Vegetarian Buah Keluak

I liked how this dish tastes and looks exactly like the non vegan version. The meat is served inside the buah keluak. Personally I preferred the rendang just cause buah keluak has a very distinct taste (both the veg and non veg versions) If you like the non veg version, you’d like this too :$

this was definitely an acquired taste.. it was slightly tangy and bitter. really enjoyed the texture of the omnipork and seed filling inside. my boyfriend who normally eats the non-vegan version said that this was almost identical to the ones he's been having all along!

I was so excited to try buah keluak after hearing how unique and delicious it was and it definitely didn't disappoint! It has a very moreish unique nutty aroma and the gravy they cooked it in really accentuated the unique flavour of what they called it as the "Truffle of the East"~🤗 This was stuffed wih Omipork btw. The only other vegan dish I got because their menu isn't super clear apart from the alternative meat logos by the side. They used Omnimeat for the stuffing in this, inside it's rather salty, definitely have it with rice. Even had a seperate spoon just for it! This fulfiled my craving for now.

The buah keluak seed, often found in Peranakan cooking, comes from the kepayang tree. The raw seed contains cyanide and is extremely deadly. In order to cook it, the seed has to go through the arduous process of curing. In typical Peranakan cuisine, the seeds are stuffed with chicken or pork and cooked in a thick gravy. This vego rendition uses Omni meat. Goes amazingly well with the gravy which is not too spicy but still packs a punch.
