although i love a good reuben, i was overall unimpressed by this one. the bread

was very good, and i love a classic dark rye, but i found the bread to be completely soaked through with the interior wetness of the sandwich. it was also not exactly “pressed,” and kind of tasted like raw bread rather than pressed or toasted. the filling was again, tasty, but extremely lacking in portion size. there was hardly any sauerkraut, and what felt like only a few slices of seitan pastrami. even though all components of this sandwich tasted great and were generally well-seasoned, there just wasn’t enough of them to justify me getting this sandwich again. it felt like mostly soggy bread.

I’ve been a few times to Golden Dinosaurs over the past handful of years. All

of their selections are what I would describe as “comfort food-esque” and I love their house-made seitan and tempeh selections. They are a little pricey but that is expected for the area and other comparable vegan options. On this trip we had delivery through UberEats and ordered French Dip, Potato Salad, Pastrami Rueben, Side Chickies, and a Peanut Butter Pie with Oreo Crust.

This vegan Pastrami Rueben combines the flavors you’d expect from a Rueben with the 1000 island sauce, rye bread, and kraut but uses Golden Dinosaurs “pastrami seitan”. For anyone wary about trying kraut or you are worried it might be too strong I can say that for me it’s a pretty mild flavor that really compliments texturally (mouth-feel matters!). We’re about 30 mins for delivery so I expected some sogginess but honestly because of the brown paper wrap they use (kind of like a parchment paper/wax paper combo) and the fact that it’s a toasty bread my Rueben was shockingly not soggy. One thing I have noticed with delivery in my area (at many locations, not just here) is that the assembly quality of dishes is much worse/sloppier than in person. I know that’s an obvious trade off for the convenience but in this instance the other half of the sandwich not pictured was not as photogenic. This doesn’t particularly bother me with any of the food I ordered this time but when you’ve had it better it’s hard not to compare! 😂

Although this is one of my favorite places to eat my carnivore partner was trying it for the first time! I really did him dirty by getting it delivery instead of fresh BUT he gave it a 7.7 out of 10! His biggest complaint was that there was too much kraut and not enough seitan. Personally I chocked that up to the delivery vs dine-in experiences described above but, he wasn’t wrong.

All being said I highly suggest bringing the meat-eaters in your life here for in-person dining on the patio. The classics-made-vegan options available means there is something for everyone! Bonus is you can squeeze in some shopping if the shops are open and burn off some of those comfort-food calories walking the cute and artsy Gulfport street!
