MN Made: 2024 wine dinner with classic Minnesotan dishes, elevated and veganized at J Selby's. 3rd course, served with Joile Laide Grenache Mouvedre Syrah
I knew there had to be wild rice somewhere on this menu! I was thinking it would be a wild rice sour, but it is the middle of summer and that's not too inventive. This pilaf was a nice use of this iconic ingredient. It's not really the nicest to look at because of the huge slab of compound butter, but boy did that hold all the flavor. It had s ton of herbs and garlic. When mixed in with the rice and mirepoix vegetables, it melted and coated the whole thing in buttery goodness. This dish especially highlights the fusion of French cooking with classic MN cuisine. It was so much butter! So tasty though.
This was paired with a Grenache Mouvedre Syrah (GMS). GMS wines are typically grown and produced in France. Notably, my favorite French region, Cotes du Rhone. This one is from California! This vineyard has held out against the more common Californian varietals like Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot. What's pretty cool about this wine is that it's in a slightly cooler/cloudier region than Cotes du Rhone due to climate change. So this wine is like time traveling back 20+ years! I got a bottle so I'll have a proper review of this when I open it up!

I was just going to say, sounds like you could've doubled the number of reviews from the evening given the way the wine pairing worked!
