I've had an uneasy history with dolmas. I've always wanted to like them, but when I was first introduced to them they were just too salty/briney for me. Now that I'm in my olive era, maybe the brininess isn't too bad anymore. It could be that or these are less salty than other dolmas I've had. Either way, I really enjoy these! They are super yummy just straight from the can. The grape leaves have such a wonderful unique flavor and the rice is so creamy. It's impressive how they fit 10 snuggly in there. Now instead of saying "packed like sardines", we can use the vegan idiom, "packed like dolmas"!

I made a Mediterranean-inspired mashed chickpea sandwich with these that I really enjoyed. For the sandwich, mash 4 dolmas, 1 can of Trader Joe's Greek Chickpeas with Parsley and Cumin (or make your own), a dollop of hummus, and a sprinkle of vegan feta. Add the mixture to a sandwich and cook it in a pan with a bit of olive oil.

This makes me crave some dolmas. And I love the “packed like dolmas” idea. PETA is extremely problematic in several ways but I actually really liked their discourse about changing our idioms. It’s wild how violence (against other humans or animals) is so woven into our everyday speech.

I agree I have a love hate relationship with them too! I always want to order them but am mostly disappointed. The concept is great right, what’s not to love about the idea of dolmas, but they’re often not very good. Still searching for one that I love. I should try making them lol 😂

This makes me wish that Trader Joe’s is in my state! I’m going to make a note to buy this on my next trip to CA. That recipe sounds so yummy!
