Another satisfying dish available at #jaikrishna Malai Kofta is a rich tomato based sauce usually with paneer dumplings, but if you request the vegan version they sub in a lovely lentil ball. The texture of the lentil is grainy which is a nice contrast to the smooth tomato curry. We ordered peas rice to go with it. Lovely winter warmer food. This dish might look a bit like green mud, but it tastes delicious, scooped up with freshly made chapati bread. Sarson da Saag originated in the Punjab according to my menu. They are green leaves of mustard and cooked like spinach. The chapati are yummy and work perfectly as a spoon! Back to our excellent, local, Indian vegetarian restaurant. Our first time trying this dish. Deeeliscious! I had to look it up as, although I’ve had the good fortune to visit India many times, I’ve never had this dish there or here in the UK. ‘Dhokla is a savoury sponge dish that is native to the Indian state of Gujarat and parts of adjacent states,and is popular throughout the country. It is made with a fermented batter that is steamed to a cake-like consistency. The batter consists of a mixture of rice with the pulse Bengal gram, but has several variants with the gram replaced by chickpeas, pigeon peas, or urad beans.’ Jai Krishna’s version had a coating of dessicated coconut, very flavoursome and a side dish of very spicy mint sauce which went perfectly with the simplicity of the #dhokla It’s a good dish to share. First time having this dish. Panipuri is a deep-fried breaded hollow spherical shell, about 1 inch in diameter, filled with a combination of potato, onion and chickpea. It is a common street food in the Indian subcontinent. It is often spiced with tamarind chutney, chili powder, or chaat masala. They look like pretty little nests. They had a delicious filling of #chickpea paste, a scattering of ruby pomegranate seeds and a topping of crisp sprinkles of onion and fresh coriander leaf. The outer casing had a great crunch to contrast with the soft mashed contents. The tamarind sauce tasted a bit odd so I avoided it on my second gol goppa. They make great appetisers. I love Jai Krishna. It has kept to its own quirky way of doing things. The customer writes out their order, hands it in and a copy is handwritten by a staff member in duplicate, one chit goes to the kitchen, one is kept to calculate the bill. No computer required. Back at our local Indian vegetarian restaurant. They have a #byob policy and prices are reasonable. The food is cooked to order and is consistently good. I broke out and ordered something different this time #peasdosa It was a crisp on the outside dosa wrapped around a firmly packed filling of peas and aloo (potato) Very nourishing. Accompanied by tomato chutney/ nice and spicy - and #sambar - a dal dish cooked with vegetables and turmeric. This restaurant is thriving decades after it opened and even with many restaurants around it in competition. The final dish in our selection of curries, rice and poori was another firm favourite, Broccoli curry. In the photo, there doesn’t appear to be a lot of broccoli, but the little florets of flavoursome joy were there just hidden in a delicious thick sauce. Broccoli is rich in calcium and vitamin K so this curry makes for healthy eating. I couldn’t detect what the other ingredients was, a little potato and tomato maybe. It’s a real stew consistency that is very hearty with the coconut rice and a poori. There are plenty of vegan dishes to choose from in this popular vegetarian restaurant. Moong Dal Curry is a good dish to combine with other curries. It’s nutritious being high in protein and known for aiding digestion and lowering blood sugar levels. Jai’s version is a nice consistency, thick with moong beans but cooked in plenty of ‘gravy’. Poori - made from unleavened whole-wheat flour, originating from the Indian subcontinent and extremely tasty. Maybe not breads to eat too often as they deep fried in oil, but I really enjoyed them to share with a selection of curries. Although fried they turn out light and puffy and compliment the spicy sauces so well. I really enjoyed Vikas’s review of Chana Masala and how you get interesting variations on the recipe depending where you are. Jai Krishna is a regular destination for us but in all the times I’ve been, I’ve never ordered Chana Masala. I’m glad I did because it was such a hearty dish with the chickpeas sitting in a rich, spicy sauce, garnished with fresh coriander. There were three of us and we ordered three different curries accompanied by coconut rice and poori which I’ll review next. Jai Krishna is a long established vegetarian restaurant with a ‘bring your own drink’ policy. Nowadays they have the menu clearly showing which dishes are vegan. We had another very tasty meal at our local Indian vegetarian restaurant. This is a starter of patra leaves accompanied by tamarind sauce. I’ve never come across them anywhere else so they are often our choice here as they are distinctive, delicious and nutritious. They are also known as Colocasia or elephants’ ears due to their shape. They are skilfully rolled before cooking and take on this attractive marble like design. The leaves rich in Vitamin A which helps our vision and Vitamin C to support our immune system. They are also rich in fibre. There are 3 discs in each serving. An original taste that I always look forward to. Still at Jai Krishna exploring the wide choice of vegan dishes. It’s a vegetarian restaurant with all dishes clearly marked and chefs who are happy to make a veg dish vegan on request. We’ve ordered the plain dosa a lot recently as a nice substitute for rice and yesterday we tried Saarson Sag which is a south Asian green that is used in a similar way to spinach. It has a thicker texture and tastes like it’s packed with iron! The okra was cooked in a tomato based sauce and we asked for a spicy hit. We got it! Nice contrast to the plainer taste of sag. I have been going to this family run restaurant for many years and it is heartening to see how popular it has remained. Sag cost £6.50 Okra cost £5.50 #veganindiancuisine #okra #govegan

Back at one of my favourite local restaurants #jaikrishna and decided to have the sharing plate of onion bhaji with tamarind sauce. Really good, freshly made, not the healthiest of choices, but sometimes you crave the crispy oily fried fix. At £4.50 per portion they are excellent value too.
