Falafel Pita from @brassicas.sandwiches.salads The Pita sandwich is one of three signature menu items at upscale Fast-casual Mediterranean eatery Brassica. The sandwich is a whole wheat pita bread cut in half, and filled with the toppings of your choice a-la-carte! Salad greens consisting of brassicas kale and shredded Napa cabbage, the choice of hummus or baba ghanouj, as well as the choice of falafel, chicken, or brisket are encouraged but optional. I filled mine up with salad greens, lentils and rice, hummus, baba ghanouj, pita chips, falafel, cucumbers and radishes, sweet beets, z'hug, cauliflower and jalapeños, and roasted carrots. Quite a hefty amount of food, but it is delicious and very much worth it. I like to add the salad greens as they are lightly dressed and taste fresh and citrus, with a hint of salt. Furthermore, the lentils and rice are a must-have. The Brassica house-made Baharat blend really makes this sub-dish so delicious. What's more, lentils and brown rice are very healthy and, when combined, make a complete protein - perfect for those on a plant-based diet! The hummus and baba are both smooth and tasty; the former with notes of lemon and garlic and the latter smokiness. The pita chips add a nice toasty crisp. The falafel is very good. It is always fresh, as their policy requires that it is thrown away after 5 minutes. I like the way the frying creates a texture complex protein. Crunchy on the outside, but soft and flavorful on the inside. (Extra credit to them for making their falafel gluten-free - it is always nice when restaurants accommodate every diet, allergy, and sensitivity.) The cukes and radishes are pickled simply, with a pleasant sweetness, and are mildly refreshing. The same goes for the sweet beets, and I really enjoy their subtle taste of mint. The z'hug is advertised as being hot, but I hardly get any heat from it at all. I enjoy it because of its herbaceousness from the cilantro, parsley and myriad of spices that all combine wonderfully together as a 'pesto'. Not 'hot' spicy, however. Personally I'd rate it a 2/10 heat wise but be warned! They say it's a 7/10, so maybe I'm just heat tolerant! The cauliflower and jalapeños are another savory option that really embodies the Mediterranean theme and taste so good. The harissa on the pan-roasted carrots is heavenly, I am a carrot enthusiast and will always ask for extra. I love this combination, but if I have to find something to critique, it would be the falafel. It is the least healthy option on the menu as a result of being deep-fried. I eat a clean, whole food plant-based diet and I notice that they make me feel slow/heavy. I know it is the falafel because I have ordered the sandwich the same, with the exclusion of the falafel, and felt light and healthy afterward. Considering they taste so good, and the rest is healthful, I do think they are totally worth indulging in. All in all, I would rate this a 10/10. Flavorful Mediterranean food with simple, healthy, ingredients - what's not to love? Especially so, with the toppings all being personally selected, it is easy to create an entrée that fulfills individual taste. I highly recommend this restaurant, more specifically the Easton Town Center location, if you are looking for consistent service of distinctively high quality; the management runs a tight ship over there! I see this concept as a success for Columbus, Ohio locals NorthStar (Who are also the owners of said café and the fine dining establishment Third & Hollywood). And with their partnership with Chipotle that started in October 2024, I am excited about the idea of interstate expansion, and, perhaps, one day finding a Brassica wherever I travel.
