I visited the city that I used to live in in Japan (Kofu) and also went to this restaurant that I used to go to a lot. At the time they did a lot of burgers and I managed to try them all. They are a small independent business and the only vegan place in Kofu.
I got this dish for lunch. You get to choose between three options for the “main meat”: Kurumahu Katsu (which is basically seitan), Atsuage (deep fried tofu), and soy meat karaage and I went with the seitan (top left corner). The rest of the bowl includes rice, various veggies and a small soup. I also decided to get a extra topping of the soy meat karaage (top middle). Their seitan remains one of the best vegan fried things I’ve had. They have perfected the batter to a satisfying crunch and that’s why my favourite burger of theirs was the one with this as the patty. So far, this is the only place in Japan that I’ve seen seitan being served.
The veggies are really refreshing and the portion size was very appropriate.
Their soy meat karaage was herby and juicy, would love to get again.
This dish was priced at ¥1200 and the extra topping was ¥120. I think it’s very reasonable and I’m also happy to pay even if it were a little more because I’d want to keep this small business going.
