When a friend suggested I try simmering my lentils with chorizo, I knew the time had finally come to sample one of Trader Joe’s most iconic products. As I was checking out, the cashier mentioned that it was indistinguishable from the real thing (I’ve never had chorizo, so I’ll take his word for it.) After a few dicey moments trying to figure out how to neatly remove it from the packaging and then the casing, my kitchen was blessed with the incredible aroma of sizzling soy sausage. It’s flavorful and rather heavy on the sodium, so I didn’t add any additional salt to my stew. The spices in the chorizo go a long way, though I also shook some hot sauce over the whole thing for a touch more heat. It was delicious — I understand the hype around this product now, and it’s well-deserved! I was also impressed by how inexpensive it was: one package flavored at least six meals — not too shabby for $2.49!
