Mama Vege

Vegan #bakzhang are hard to come by for some reason in Penang 😄 Plain halal rice and water chestnut ones were so common in Kuching. It comes vacuumed sealed in a #deathbyplastic wrapper that you then need to open up and steam for a bit. It came out just fine with my microwave’s steam setting too 🤗 It tastes really healthy. It’s branny all around being composed oats, red rice, and brown rice. There’s also water chestnut bits in there for some extra bites but I couldn’t tell what else. According to their website the ingredients are “Japanese Shiitake, Chestnut, Mung Bean, White Cowpea, Vegetarian Soy Meat Slices, Oat, Black Rice, Red Rice”. I might get this again should I have the cravings cause it’s really not bad, save for their unfortunate use of single-use plastic. #veganin2021 #supportlocal

abi88 Wow!! So similar to our Mexican tamales — with banana leaves — the base is of corn 😜 but looks exactly the same.3 likesReply
dafnelately I’ve heard of those! I think pretty much every culture around the world at one point or another took grains and boiled them in leaves 😂 There are so many dishes like this throughout Asia, and this is just the Chinese version!2 likesReply
