Review of Nasi Lemak at Minf Houze Vegan Cafe by stevenneoh

Kudos again for an attempt to veganly interpret nasi lemak. But it just lacks a certain something which I can't put my finger on. The sambal was really good even though they swapped out the ikan bilis and used sliced mushroom. The curry with potato and mock meat pieces wasn't bad either. Perhaps it was the rice - surely you can't call it nasi lemak if you drop the santan...

(They are usually quite good about environmental awareness, I think/hope this copious plastic use is just an MCO thing.)

choyyuen Vegan diet is the best way to fix global warming & climate change. Veganizing 1mg CO2 at a time is perhaps too slow huh? 🤔 Reply
stevenneoh @choyyuen I wouldn't agree with that statement. (1) Alimentation contributes 18-26% (depending on method/source, e.g. how to account for deforestation) of all GHG emiswsions and consists of many distributed agents like farms/ranches, where the mechanisms and economics of change are tricker. (2) food emissions are a combination of (a) energy + land use in breeding/cultivation, (b) transportation/distribution, (c) preparation at home, so everything we eat has a different value. Homemade sambal belacan may be less harmful than imported Mexican rice. That what my turn of phrase means. Reply
choyyuen My apology 😔 if I've unintentionally offended you. PETA has explained "fight climate change by going vegan"; UN experts also mentioned "plant-based diet can fight climate change". I've noticed your dedication in reviewing plant-based/vegan dishes & products and quite amazed of your effort being a flexitarian and vegan-to-be. Veganising 1mg CO2 at a time seems so slow...🐌 Of course, everyone has his/her own comfort zone & choice. It is just a friendly reminder, nothing personal. 😃 Reply
stevenneoh @choyyuen Nah don't worry it's nothing personal. I am just annoyed by orgs (like peta which you mention) which oversimplify climate change to suit their own purposes. (Read the debate about rice to see why things are not so simple.) I believe we should drastically reduce consumption of terrestrial animal products and to that end I'm happy to support the vegan community.Reply
choyyuen I guess it's not easy to explain technical aspects to layman, unless people are trained in your profession. I read about rice issue. Now I seldom take rice. I prefer millet which uses less water in cultivation. I share the same sentiments that meat consumption should be reduced & even banned eventually! In Bhutan, the government does not allow killing animals for food. I hope more countries can enact such law. Thanks for your sharing. 😃Reply
moralcompassion4all Don't fully trust PETA. If you know Gary Yourofsky, you will know why.Reply
