Out here in South Louisiana, we have a few more seasons each year in addition to winter, spring, summer, and fall. We also have festival season, king cake season, and satsuma season! Satsumas are small, mandarin orange-type citrus fruits, and they grow here in Louisiana from late October to mid- or late January. It can be difficult to find consistently good fruit, but these satsumas from Ben Becnel & Son, a major grower of all kinds of citrus, are always so sweet, juicy, and easy to peel. They blow Halos, Cuties, and other sub-par mandarins out of the water! A 3 LB bag is always reasonably priced at local markets and can also be found at the Becnel's produce stand. Like all good things, satsuma season is coming to an end. I am already looking forward to October!
