$3 by donation at this Buddhist temple. This is their Thu special, and they also have mixed veg rice daily. Yummy dish with plenty of beansprouts for yay! Some pieces of tofu. Mock meat was yummy and flavorful. They used the traditional flat yellow noodles which not many vegetarian stalls use. Definitely wanna come back for more! #sgcheapandgood #buddhist

fourdollars I always thought yellow noodle is made from egg..this was vegan?Reply
herbimetal @fourdollars I didn’t ask but Chinese vegetarian places often don’t use egg. Next time I’ll check to be sure. Mummy yummy also sells flat yellow noodles and it’s a fully vegan stall. Reply
choyyuen No need to use eggs to make yellow noodles, some wonton noodles maybe... I've been a volunteer cook in several temples. Eggs are not allowed in most temples in Singapore. Hope this info helps. Reply
herbimetal @choyyuen cool thanks Reply
choyyuen @herbimetal I have also been to temples in Malaysia, Hong Kong, Taiwan and China. Mostly vegan food! Eggs are prohibited in temples cos it is considered a life and against precepts. It can be an offending question to ask if there is egg in their temple food. In taiwan, they may take dairy, but definitely no eggs. Btw, yellow noodles is yellow colour due to alkalisation process. Lye water is added to give the chewy texture & prevent noodles from disintegating when cooked. Some dye their noodles yellow to skimp on the eggs. Hope these info helps. 😃Reply
herbimetal @choyyuen thanks for the detailed info! I’m not so familiar with Chinese Mahayana temples as I follow many Theravada Buddhist teachers, most monks don’t observe vegetarianism.Reply
choyyuen @herbimetal Hope I didn't carry away too much! 😂 my affinity mostly with Mahayana temples. I used to cook for the monks & nuns, so knew abit more on their diet. Mostly vegans!Theravada monks still follow the tradition of almsgiving from devotees, so can't choose their food. 😔Reply
herbimetal @choyyuen that’s nice. Yeah they receive alms. Some of them do choose to follow a vegetarian diet though. Reply
