El Pollo Loco sent me a free gift card. I’m super happy they have vegan foods now, but I can’t bring myself to eat there. Even if it’s free. Gave the card and t-shirt away to someone who needed them.

Another great substitution with their new vegan chicken! The avocado was fresh, the fajitas were tasty, and the greens were abundant. Unfortunately the creamy cilantro dressing isn’t vegan, but their amazing avocado salsa is :)

This is the type of dish I’ll be thinking about until the next time I get one. The vegan chicken is good, but in the burrito it becomes a bit muddled in the same texture. Subbing it into the tostada bowl (a childhood favorite of mine) and removing cheese and sour cream makes it a vegan delight. It still has lettuce, rice, beans, pico de gallo, and the shell (the best part!), plus complimentary avocado salsa on the side. I hope they add it to the official menu at some point, but in the meantime I’m happy asking for the substitution.

I had only planned on getting a burrito, but in the moment of impulse in the drive-thru line I added this side of beans as well. They also have black beans, rice, steamed vegetables, and Tapatio fries that are all already vegan. I don’t eat pinto beans often, not usually making them at home and not always sure if they’ll be vegetarian when out at a restaurant. But having that guarantee here and knowing how good they taste, I was very happy to add this simple yet tasty side dish to my meal.

There was a time in my omnivorous life where I was eating El Pollo Loco weekly, always getting enough leftovers to bring for school lunch the next day. Even as I went vegetarian, I’d continue going and getting BRCs and tostada salads without meat. However, once I went vegan the options felt more and more limited and so I went less and less. How exciting it is to find out they’re now offering a vegan meat alternative! I appreciate that they explicitly have a vegan version of their burritos/tacos as opposed to having to order with omissions. It doesn’t taste as good as the flame-grilled chicken I remember there as a kid, but having the experience of going back is well worth it for me. Plus, their avocado salsa is one of my favorite things, on this burrito and just in general.
