Kapitan Chicken w Steamed Rice

Reviews by abillion’s vegan community

Now I’m extremely jealous of @consciouscookieee’s plating of this 😐 I tossed this in the microwave and ate this (barely) as is. No vegetables, nothing. @m1tch9i was clearly worried leaving me alone for a month so she stocked up on some #instantfood that I could easily #microwave at my convenience. Apparently a garden medley & a 6 pack doesn’t count as a meal 🙄 I couldn’t stomach the rice cause I did it per packet instructions, without added water and it was too dry & sticky for my liking — two things I never thought my #dayak tastebuds would utter. The #kapitan #curry was good though and would pass in a #nonya restaurant, kudos 👏 It’s a lot more fatty, “spicey” but in no way #spicy, and much more indulgent than my last 👉 https://www.abillion.com/dishes/greens-cafe-%E9%9A%8F%E6%84%8F%E5%B0%8F%E9%A6%86-kapitan-curry-%E7%94%B2%E5%BF%85%E4%B8%B9%E5%92%96%E5%93%A9-10444515 😮‍💨 It’s also room-temperature stable. No need to refrigerate it! Absolutely perfect given my once organised fridge has fallen chaos to my new housemate 👉 https://www.abillion.com/posts/6535320056413e825ac712bd 😭 Mind you this one serving is 717 calories 😳 That’s 21g of protein, adequate but nothing to really boast over, and just over 10% fat which all things considered is not too bad. I’d pass on the rice but happily have the #veganchicken bit once in a blue moon for convenience sake 🐣

Never heard of Kapitan Curry (originating from Malaysia & Indonesia) & so many other Southeast Asian curries before coming across Roots Palate (avail at Yes Natural & online)! Love how they’ve made these more accessible to us in plant-based & super convenient-to-prepare forms :> According to Wiki, “Kari kapitan, or Captain's chicken curry, is a classic #Nyonya dish. It is normally a richer, drier, and thicker version of the standard local chicken curry, with each household having its own family recipe. The origins of the name of the dish, Kari kapitan, are much debated. One popular suggestion is that a ship's captain during the colonial period in Penang asked his cook what was being prepared for dinner, to which the cook responded: 'Kari, kapitan!'. Nonetheless, the title 'kapitan' was first introduced during the 16th century by the Portuguese and was used to indicate a local leader, without any specifically nautical connotation.” #vestigesofcolonialism This curry was mildly spicy & tasted like it had dessinâtes coconut in the mix. Super flavourful and fragrant & pairs really well with rice for warm & hearty rainy day meal 😋✨ #curry
