Obbattu/HoLige is a South Indian sweet dish usually made at home during festivals.
It’s kind of like a crepe stuffed with a paste made of jaggery and cooked split yellow pigeon peas. The very thin outer layer is made of flour+fine semolina. Quite a process to make it!
It’s super convenient to be able to buy it from Santhanam Sweets all year round! They do a great job of getting it to taste authentic.
I got them home delivered via Swiggy. They’re sold for takeaway in packs of five. Couldn’t resist ordering a bunch of savoury snacks to go with it. 😛
I enjoy my HoLige warm with hot vegan mylk to tone down the sweetness a bit. One day I had it with soy and the next with homemade cashew-oat.
Pricing is pretty decent. Rs. 98 for 5 pcs. Or Rs. 20 for a single one.
The place is fully vegetarian but they have only a handful of vegan options. They don’t know what vegan means but if you walk into their location and list out dairy products they’ll tell you what’s safe to eat. The staff members seem quite helpful.
Don’t trust the ingredients list on Swiggy though. Best to talk to them and ask pointed questions.
I only order stuff online that I’ve verified with them beforehand.
