I remember reading an interview with the actor Natalie Portman who, when asked about her
vegan diet, joked that she ate her body weight in hummus. This stuck in my mind as that’s also me. What did I even do before hummus came into my life? Now, even on the days when the fridge is empty as no one’s done a grocery shop, there’s usually still hummus. When the hummus is finished, that’s when our grocery needs get serious.
Which brings me to Ramona’s Heavenly Houmous. (I’ve always spelt it as hummus, so please excuse the two spellings!) But first: years ago I discovered my favourite hummus in Henderson’s in Edinburgh. Henderson’s was a very popular and long-running vegetarian and vegan café, restaurant, deli, and farm shop, and in recent years they expanded with a second café and a vegan restaurant, until the pandemic when Henderson’s closed their various doors and sadly never opened again.
But they used to do a wicked hummus. It had a dense texture peppered with chickpeas – as in, not all blended together but properly textured. For years, when I lived in Edinburgh, this was my favourite hummus as you could buy it in tubs from Henderson’s deli. Supermarket-bought variations never quite hit the mark.
Until Ramona’s Heavenly Houmous appeared in Tesco. While not as textured as Henderson’s homemade hummus, Ramona’s version has a pleasing bit of texture in there. Most supermarket hummus is whipped and smooth and gloopy, whereas Ramona’s Heavenly Houmous has body and is just filled with flavour. It feels homemade (okay, better than homemade), and is the most more-ish hummus – or houmous – I’ve tried in a long time*.
Also, with a 500g tub (there are 3 sizes but I’ve only been able to buy the 500g tub locally), it’s a good size if you’re a hummus-all-day-long person like me.
*There is one other delicious hummus that I need to share and review here, but that’s for another time. And Ramona’s is definitely my number one.
