My extended family is all omni, so for Thanksgiving, it fell to me to source my own vegan food — especially the #protein. I was searching for a small #fakemeat roast and not having much success (apparently the Trader Joe’s Turkey-less Roast is discontinued?); luckily, I chanced upon this bag of #veganchicken/chick’n cutlets and immediately recognized how perfect it was for my needs. Firstly, it’s economical: I discovered this as #groceryoutletfinds, so it was just $2.50, which works out to approximately $0.63 per serving. Even at the normal price of ~$1.50/piece, they’re fairly affordable compared to similar products. It’s also nice that they come four palm-sized pieces to a bag, as I’m often irked by the dainty portioning of other vegan frozen foods. Secondly, it’s convenient. Having the pieces already formed means no thawing or slicing — they simply need to be removed from the bag, still frozen, and quickly cooked. They can be prepared on the stovetop in a small non-stick frying pan with a lid, so no ovens or other appliances are required, and because they can be made to order, you can enjoy them at their freshest each time and will never end up saddled with an unmanageable amount of leftovers. Finally, they’re delicious! I prepared mine according to the directions on the back (covered and heated for 4 minutes, flipping once, then added a couple tablespoons of water and continued to cook under cover for 5 minutes) and it was great! So succulent, juicy, and tender. Just keep in mind that they’re lightly seasoned — as long as you sauce them appropriately, they’ll be excellent. These aren’t reliably stocked in my area, but I liked them a lot and would certainly get them again. I imagine they’d be really helpful for veganizing any number of dishes I used to enjoy, like chick’n piccata, marsala, amandine, or katsu. Gardein has so many great options, but the versatile scallopini might be a new favorite! #veganisnotscary
