I’ve been a few times to Golden Dinosaurs over the past handful of years. All of their selections are what I would describe as “comfort food-esque” and I love their house-made seitan and tempeh selections. They are a little pricey but that is expected for the area and other comparable vegan options. On this trip we had delivery through UberEats and ordered French Dip, Potato Salad, Pastrami Rueben, Side Chickies, and a Peanut Butter Pie with Oreo Crust.
Woah. Nelly. This French Dip is probably my FAVORITE dish from Golden Dinosaurs. No, not probably, it is my favorite dish. The crazy part? HATED IT when I was a meat eater! Growing up I remember my mother ordering and eating French dip whenever it was available on a menu. As a dipping family where sauces/dips/spreads were more of a kitchen staple than fresh fruits you’d think I would have tore it up, but I never liked the mouth feel or taste of the traditional roast beef of a French dip. So maybe it’s the nostalgia for me of finally being able to make my mother proud of a decision I made or the fact that Golden Dinosaur makes a killer seitan steak but either way I would fight, kill, and die for this sandwich (not really but now you understand the passion lol). As I’ve mentioned in the other reviews for this order the presentation was lacking considering delivery and that I know how tasty it looks when you eat in-person but it was still delicious. It’s smoky from the steak seitan, tangy from the horsey sauce, and best of all cheesy. Something worth noting is that the Au Jus is salty. For me that makes it better (in fact I paid the up charge for extra) but if you are trying to keep low sodium this should be considered. I love the mouth feel of this - crusty French bread with hearty seitan steak, creamy vegan cheese, and then dipped in a “wet”!
My Carnivore Partner picked this as his number one dish of the order (we have not tried dessert yet though so we will see shortly). Of all the meal/side options we ordered on this trip my partner loved this best. He said the flavors and balance of ingredients was nice and added that he was surprised this is a dish that had been “vegan-sized”.
At the (almost) conclusion of this meal Golden Dinosaurs still stands out as a great place to take the meat-eaters in your life. The classics-made-vegan options available means there is something for everyone! If you missed it before of this is the only review you see from me eat on the outdoor patio vs take out OR delivery! Bonus is you can squeeze in some shopping if the shops are open and burn off some of those comfort-food calories walking the cute and artsy Gulfport street!
