Oooh this was disappointing, but only because Roots Palate really raised the bar with its other products (I'm looking at you, nasi lemak with anchovies sambal 👀) tempered with spices and herbs like lemongrass and turmeric. Here the grasp has loosened (curry powder and chilli - that's it?). Plus this vegetarian lamb and potato curry tasted like standard fare from your Chinese vegetarian stall-next-door - which I guess in itself is an achievement, but also doesn't distinguish itself much. It's not bad, just average.

It’s always risky slapping #rendang on something on having me try it 😛 Now if I’m trying this right, theirs uses a mix of #curry powder, #ginger, and #soysauce — no mention of #coconut whatsoever. Oh boy 🤦‍♀️ Right off, the #lamb or #mutton, whatever way we call it to separate from the animal itself tastes alright… but it’s hardly rendang. Oddly enough though their #kapitan curry instead features #coconutmilk but no soy sauce 👉 https://www.abillion.com/products/roots-palate-kapitan-chicken-w-steamed-rice-10572240 🧐 Do I have things completely backwards?? There’s also the matter of the amount of plastic this uses. It’s #instantfood so of course it makes sense there’s a lot, except Thoughtful has somehow figured out a way to put a shelf stable #microwave meal into a tin can. Including a spoon here is excessive though because there are very few scenarios I can imagine where a microwave is a given but a spoon is not. Student dorms? An Airbnb? 🤷‍♀️ Learning from my past mistake I opted not to reheat their rice but instead pair it with some rice from #borneo I had sitting in the fridge. Just as instant & a far better pairing 😋 Oh and if nutrition is something that matters to you, look away 👀 This feels like a meal you’d only call for if off-brand vegan rendang in plastic was really something you’re in the mood for.
