This black sesame is a great contrasting flavor to the yuzu. While the yuzu was light and citrus-y, the sesame had a really mellow, nutty sweetness that was very unique. It has somewhat of a chocolatey flavor, but I'd doesn't have the bitterness of chocolate. I think it's also nice that it's not too sweet. After a lovely afternoon hanging out around Longfellow, @jonok and I had a great meal at Okome. I was really happy to see that they have soy milk mochi! I'm not sure if it's new, or it was just the first time I noticed them. I love yuzu, so it was cool to see it as a flavor! This was so fresh. It was a nice smooth citrus flavor. It reminded me of a lemon tart. I would definitely get this again! This udon ramen is served with two mixed vegetable tempura patties on the side. I've never had ramen like this before! I love how crunchy tempura veggies are, so it's a nice contrast to the soft, chewy udon noodles. Okome House's broth is nice, but the noodles are the best part of their soups. I also like the big pieces of seaweed in this one. The vegetable tempura was really great dipped in the broth. I liked it more dipped in the broth than by itself. The broth helps cut down on the greasiness a bit. You can get this with the udon combo for $20. This onigiri is just classic rice, seaweed, and sea salt. I kind of panicked and picked it instead of another veggie onigiri. I still enjoyed this. It wasn't as salty as I was expecting throughout, but the salty section was really nice. These are nice little handheld rice sandwiches that are perfect to bring on a picnic to nearby Minnehaha Falls. If you're here for onigiri, I'd recommend getting the onigiri combo! You can pick three onigiri and it's served with a side of seaweed salad and curry vegetables or miso soup! This takuan onigiri was new to me. It's made with pickled daikon radish. It had a nice tang to it and the radish gave it a nice crunch. I took @jonok to Minnehaha falls for the first time on this very warm weekend! It was so nice to hike around in the warm weather. We also found some skunk cabbage. They are very strange spring ephemerals that grow in boggy environments. Okome House provided a wonderful dinner after a long walk around the park. I got the Onigiri Combo with this seaweed salad. You'd think salty seaweed wouldn't be so refreshing, but it really was! It didn't harbor too much sea flavor and had a nice crunch. Agedashi tofu is a dish I have to order if I see a vegan version! Okome House serves theirs with grated daikon and ginger on top. The broth is so flavorful! It's salty and delicious. The tofu itself didn't really have the flavor I was looking for. It's hard to pinpoint since this is really such a simple dish. Maybe it was the breading that I wasn't a big fan of. When I was trying to pick up the tofu and split it up, the outside even seemed a bit gelatinous which I found odd. This kitsune is a familiar dish that @jonok picked out. It has thin slices of delicious, sweet inari. This is the sweetest inari I've ever had! But I thought it went well with the broth and the huge pieces of seaweed. The noodles here are so thick and chewy! They're so fun to slurp! The dishes here are so reasonable! This wonderful bowl of comfort is only $12! Fun fact: Kitsune means "fox" in Japanese. Curry with udon sounded interesting, and so cozy so I had to go for it. This dish still comes with the vegetable broth that all of the other udon choices do. The curry flavor definitely comes through though! It has the elements of traditional Japanese curry, but it's added to a broth with delicious, thick, slurpable udon noodles. It also comes with large pieces of tender carrot, corn kernels, and fresh green onion. This rice ball is stuffed with fried organic tofu with miso sauce and wrapped in nori. The tofu here is so sweet, but in a good way. It's like inari tofu skin and has a great sponge texture. This onigiri is stuffed with ume (pickled plum). I have had onigiri only one other time before my trip to Okome House. It was the ume onigiri from Kyatchi in South Minneapolis. I wasn't the biggest fan, but probably because it was offered as a dessert since they didn't have any vegan desserts. I enjoyed this time onigiri from Okome much more. I was able to appreciate the tartness from the vinegar. Okome House is a nice casual place with lots of vegan options! I was so happy to see 8 vegan onigiri flavors on the menu! When I was a kid I always loved the look of adorable Pokémon eating these little filled rice balls. I haven't had the opportunity to have these much because for some reason they're not too common in MN, even at sushi restaurants that would have all the ingredients. @jonok and I ordered three flavors and I was so excited to live out my Pikachu fantasy with this flight of tasty rice balls. This konbu onigiri was my pick. It tastes like the ocean in the best way possible. It's stuffed with sweet soy simmered kelp that has such a nice flavor. It's salty while still feeling light and fresh.
