Tucson Tamale’s Blue Corn & Veggie Tamales were super disappointing. To give some context, I like Mexican cuisine and trying lots of vegan Mexican recipes and products at home, except I like more mild to medium spicy food. I found a few flavors of frozen tamales at Natural Grocers on Friday, even a couple of vegan options. I tried to cook this in the microwave as recommended (wrapped in wet paper towels and cooked for 4 minutes). It ended up being kind of cold and a little icy. I tried warming the tamales up for two minutes without the corn husks, which was a stupid idea because they burned. These tamales would be last in a food beauty pageant because they looked so appalling and unappetizing that I almost didn’t try them. I cut a tamale open only to discover the inside didn’t cook that much. The taste wasn’t that good (mainly from the choice of taco shell and salsa). The veggie combo would have been ten times better with the addition of some pinto beans, garbanzos, or a vegan meat substitute. This company has a lot of work to do to improve their vegan options, but I’m happy they’re working hard to provide vegetarian and vegan options for their customers.
