If it grows together it goes together! I love the combination of beans, squash, and corn in any form. This soup presents them beautifully. It's made with beans, squash broth, and hominy. The squash broth was super creamy. It was more of a thinned out pureed squash than a true "broth". I really enjoyed the hominy. Hominy is corn that goes through a process called nixtamalization. It has a really nice soft bean-like texture and is actually considered more nutritious than corn! #soup #beans #hominycorn #squash #microgreens #finedining #autumn

This is a huge dish that's in the small plates section. Really everything at Owamni is meant to be shared, and this is a great option. It comes with two huge slices of acorn squash, three tortillas, garlic confit, and our choice of two sauces. We went with the winter pesto and maple pepita sauces. This was super delicious, especially because of the sauces. The squash was a lot compared to the tortillas, but you could also eat it by itself dressed up with the sauces. The winter pesto was my favorite. The maple pepita was a nice choice too. It was sweet, but went really well with the squash. This carrot tartare was a really great appetizer. It's topped with pieces of berry leather, sumac, and maple walnuts and served with corn chips. Owamni is a decolonized restaurant, so it focuses on dishes made from plants and animals that can be found in the Americas. Carrots as we know them most likely originated in western Asia, but there are American wild carrots. I'm not sure this dish really uses these wild carrots, but I guess it can allude to them. This starter is a bit sweet, but really enjoyable. The carrot flavor comes through and has that nice shredded carrot texture. This mocktail is so perfect for the fall. It's made with cranberry, sage-infused maple, ginger, allspice, and juniper. The ginger provided a pleasant burning in my throat that I really enjoy when it's cold out. It feels medicinal in a good way 😌. When I was here last March, they offered a Manoomin (wild rice) zero-proof cocktail. It was so amazing! It was similar to horchata. I thought this may be similar, but unfortunately that wasn't the case. This drink is still a nice comforting tea. The toasty nuttiness from the manoomin is the primary flavor. The tea lattes are made with pepita milk. This also has Yaupon green tea, so it's caffeinated. The green tea flavor is subtle, but mixes with the toasted puffed rice flavor so it almost tastes like matcha. It's so great to go to a restaurant and see 2/3 of the desserts are vegan! These tamales are stuffed with maple squash. The tamales themselves don't have much sweetness, but they're served with fresh maple syrup! This is a unique and fun twist on the tamales I've had before. This may have been my favorite part of the meal. These two delicious sweet potato donuts are topped with maple vanilla and candied seeds. The raspberries on top were perfect too. The donut itself wasn't too sweet, it was really just a nice vessel for the toppings. The maple was so incredible. I don't know why anyone uses honey when maple syrup exists! It has such a great, cozy flavor. This was the only large vegan dish available at the time. It's in the "the share" section and is great for two people. It could really be split between more of you wanted! It comes with a side of four blue corn tortillas. I wasn't expecting a tortilla, but I liked making my own tacos. The tortillas were so fresh and delicious! The green tomatoes were stuffed with wild rice and black beans picadillo. It was a nice satisfying filling. The mushroom gravy is what really pulled us in to pick this dish. @jonok makes a wonderful mushroom gravy, so we like to see how restaurants approach theirs. This sweet potato mash was the creamiest mash I've ever had. I'm not sure I could say I really liked it that creamy. When I make mashed potatoes at home, I keep the skin on and roughly mash it so it has more texture. The pepitas on top were the only thing that really gave this dish any texture. Corn chowder, a classic! This was the first dish on our menu and we immediately decided on trying it. It includes a corn dumpling and is topped with popcorn. This soup definitely had the sweetness of corn, but there were delicious peppery undertones. I wouldn't say it was spicy, but it did leave a nice sensation in the back of my throat. I loved the Corn Fried Tepary the last time I was here, so when I saw tepary on the menu again, I immediately wanted to try it. This bean dip is similar to hummus in texture. It's topped with pepitas and microgreens and is served with wild rice crackers. I really enjoyed the flavor! It's a good earthy bean dip, with just a hint of sweetness. The pepitas made it really great and the crackers were delicious. It was a bit warm out, even with the snow this weekend, so I wanted to go with an iced drink. This cedar drink also has sumac, elderflower, lilac, and ginger in it. I was surprised that this was fairly sweet. They don't use cane sugar here with the decolonized menu, and there's no honey in it. Ginger really goes well in almost any drink and the sumac and top was a nice flavorful addition. I was pleased that even with both elderflower and lilac, this wasn't too floral. The cedar made it have a nice woodsy feel. This drink did a good job representing a spring forest.
