Sogo’s faux meats are very spendy compared to their tofu. In the refrigerator case, I spied whole “veggie chickens” made of what looked to be seitan selling for something like $25, which definitely gave me sticker shock. This was one of the more affordable options, although I thought $8.99 still wasn’t cheap for a tray of #mockmeat slices, which need to be partnered with other foods to really become a meal. Unfortunately (for my wallet, at least,) they were infuriatingly good — I’d go so far as to say one of the best things I’ve had in recent memory. They were sort of reminiscent of sausage or maybe ham, with a satisfying chew and rich smoky-umami flavor. My favorite part, though, was the embedded vegetables, particularly the unexpected crunchy bits (possibly water chestnut?) which kept things fresh and interesting. This shop is a bit out of the way for me, which is probably for the best because otherwise I’d be buying and eating these rolls all the time. Although I just griped about the prices, I do like to #supportlocal (especially Taiwanese-owned businesses!) and believe that Sogo offers up some really wonderful, high-quality foods.
