I rarely visit the East Bay these days, so I’m pretty unfamiliar with the vegan dining scene there. My non-vegan friend was actually the one to find and suggest this spot. #bayarea #veganrestaurant Contrary to what abillion says, this restaurant has moved to a new location at 1169 W A St, Hayward, CA 94541 (I’ve submitted a request to get it changed and hope that can be addressed soon.) It’s tucked away in an unassuming corner of an outdoor mall. Veggie Lee has a HUGE menu of vegan and #alliumfree American-style #chinese dishes, and while we ordered a couple of those to try, I was also drawn to the 蘿蔔糕 (#radish cake,) a #dimsum favorite. Typical preparations often involve pork and shrimp, so I hadn’t had it in quite a while. I was nervous about what my friend would think of this lesser-known dish, but actually, it ended up being his favorite! (He gave it 5 stars, and I would rate it as a 3, so I’ve compromised and given it a 4 in taste.) For me, it wasn’t quite right — this cake had a mushier texture than I’m accustomed to (sort of like mashed potato + soft shredded radish) and tasted slightly sour, as though pickled radish had been used. The pieces were crisp and nicely pan-fried, though. It wasn’t bad, but definitely not the comfort food I was expecting. $7.95 for 6 pieces. #chinesefood
