As a Texan carnivore turned New Yorker vegetarian, I craved some Texas comfort foods like
chicken fried steak. I was pleasantly surprised to find this soul food restaurant in Oakland, CA that had country fried seitan. Indulgent, hearty, and extremely comforting.
I really wished I liked this restaurant more than I do, it’s an institution in
the SF Bay Area vegan scene. But this dish was just okay. What looks like dal is actually mashed potatoes, which were good, but a bit too salty. The greens were way too salty. The chicken fried steak was okay, but there was hardly any gravy. After having excellent Cajun food in Mendocino (Fog Eater Cafe), I don’t think I’d be happy with anything else.
The seitan was great. Awesome mashed potatoes. Yum yum.
