I spent this past weekend in Ottawa and while strolling through the
ByWard Market, my non-vegan friend and I stumbled upon this vegetarian restaurant. Apart from a couple menu items that contain dairy cheese (but have a vegan cheese alternative option), everything on the menu is vegan. According to our waitress, the token dairy cheese offerings are simply to appeal to the masses who have an easier time accepting and eating at a vegetarian restaurant than a vegan restaurant. As we know, there’s a negative connotation with the word “vegan”. It’s simply marketing and a great way to get people to unknowingly eat vegan. 
We happen to be at this restaurant during its happy hour (3:00-6:00 pm, daily) and enjoyed the Prosperous Dip. This dip was absolutely delicious and nutritious. One of the menu photos lists the ingredients in this dish. The wonderful thing about this dip is its simple everyday ingredients. They’re so easy to obtain and this dip would be easy to prepare.
The corn chips were lightly salted. Even after generously helping ourselves to the dip with every chip, there were still some dip left over. This was a very pleasant surprise.

This restaurant was yet another example of how easily accessible vegan food is and how ubiquitous vegan food is becoming. For my friend, this was another example of great tasting vegan food, and another little glimpse into my vegan world. 
On a side note, Pure Kitchen Rideau restaurant has partnered with Operation Come Home (OCH). OCH is an employment, education, and support centre for homeless and at-risk youth aged 16 and up. Their vision is to prevent homeless youth from becoming homeless adults, by providing innovative programs and services designed to engage youth in productive activities that will provide them with a foundation to continue with their life goals. $1 from each ordered monthly feature will get donated to the restaurant’s community partners.
