Pannatone used to be an imported product we get during Christmas. It was not a common item in local bakeries when I was growing up. I first tasted it fresh on a trip to Italy and that is probably the best I have ever had. Read more about Pannatone & how it can be eaten below.
I have to get this when I see it freshly made at our local vegetarian bakery. It says mixed fruit bread in Mandarin.
The texture is bread like and lighter However, I prefer the more cake like density. It is not too sweet which I prefer. The mixed fruits are sparse, more towards the bread variety. I prefer it richly packed. For S$2.70 this is a really affordable and crowd pleaser.
As promised, more about Pannatone.
Pannatone is a dry, cake-like bread that originated in Italy in the 1500s. It started off as a luxury cake that was only eaten for religious celebrations.
It can be eaten with the slices toasted and served with vegan butter or cheese for breakfast. It can also be served as a simple dessert with chocolate, caramel or maple syrup. It is even nicer if toasted with a sprinkle of cinnamon powder.
