On Friday, I attended Daily Maverick’s The Gathering | Earth Edition at the Cape Town
International Convention Centre, and was really disappointed by the absence of focus on the urgent need to transform the world’s food system through widespread change to plant-based diets and vegan restorative ethics.
Like all previous United Nations COP climate change conferences, the menu of this conference reflected this depressing retrogressive approach. A lost opportunity for real change, I felt. 😢😳🔥🌍
Luckily, I was in the company of a good friend and fellow vegan, so we zipped around the corner at lunch time and were thrilled to find MRKT on Heerengracht Street. We were warmly welcomed with a clear YES 🤗 💚 when we asked if they had vegan options. Always a great start!
We ordered two hummus and roast veggie wraps, which came with chips or salad (we had one of each). And everything was superfresh, tasty and delicious! The interior of the café seemed appealingly Japanese-Swedish-inspired and casual. And we received the kindest, most attentive service!
We were in a dash and were able to have a delicious, filling and healthy lunch and still make it back to the next session of the conference in time. So yes! Big thumbs up for MRKT Cape Town! 👍 I’ll be returning for sure. Not so sure about returning for the next edition of the conference though. I think I’ll be seeking vegan solidarity and solutions for our planet elsewhere!
