I had heard AMAZING things about the Southern Fried Vegan Chicken Burger from Knead and
was very keen to try it. I wasn’t completely blown away, and this is why.
Firstly, Knead has a NEW VEGAN MENU, but only at 5 of their 9 branches, so make sure you know which one is which (from their website). We planned to go to Wembley to try the burgers but ended up at Muizenberg because Wembley still has the old menu.
The burger is made from the exceptional On The Green Side chicken alternative and then marinated in coconut yoghurt, seasoned with a flour coating, deep-fried and dressed with a crunchy slaw, gherkins and sriracha mayo. It doesn’t mention pineapple on the menu. And mine had pineapple. Not a fan. I have NO issue with it being offered, but I would have asked for mine to be taken off (no wastage) had I known it included pineapple.
My biggest issue is the fantastic chicken breast is served on a Kaiser sesame bun. While the bun itself is lovely, it is so big, thick and crunchy that one struggles to actually comprehend the taste of the chicken. One gets the crunch of the roll, followed by the tanginess (and crunch) of the slaw, pineapple and mayo.
I think what would have made this PERFECT was a softer roll so that I could really get the star of the dish: the Southern Fried Chicken.
The burger (with hand-cut fries) is R98.
