There’s an old folklore in #Penang that recalls the origin of the name of this #nonya dish 👵 One day, a captain smells a delicious dish coming from the kitchen so he asks the chef, “What are you cooking?”. “Kari kapitan (captain)”, the chef responds. Or perhaps he truly was referring to the “Kapitan”, once a high ranking government position in colonial times tasked with overseeing their ethnic communities. This colonial-era #peranakan dish tells of a time of much healthier racial tolerance and inter-mingling where conversations such as the racial requirements of our prime minister would never even be called into question. Surely it ought just to be a white man? 😜 I digress. A white man though would have loved this #curry 🥘 It’s almost entirely #potato 🥔 There’s the odd #hericiummushroom here and there and it does lay atop a bed of long beans 🫘 but more so than not this is absolutely a #potatolover affair. Moreover, this curry is nothing in the ways of #spicy — not even a tinge. My dutch grandmother, why she called black pepper spicy, but she’d easily down this. Not a #chilli in sight! In spite of that it was delightful 😇 Though I’m bringing my own #hotsauce here in the future. Perhaps we can find compromise with our racist country leaders. They should be happy to know that we weren’t #diningwithchopsticks & though not with our hands either, remind them of a time in which what we have today would not have been taken for granted. This was a medium at RM25. They have a small portion going at RM12.50 and a large at RM36. What an odd scale to climb 🧗‍♀️ #punbasedlife #veganuary #malaysianeats #stopracism #kapitan
